Okay, so today I was playing Sonic the Hedgehog 2. I decided to play through all the classics again since I am pumped up for Sonic's latest Anniversary game. And I discovered a hilarious glitch that might be the best in the whole franchise. So I was just speeding along through Wing Fortress Zone. I reached the top of the fortress. And you know how this is that huge tail fin that has an elevator and an extra life on top of it? And there is that speed-up box at the bottom. So I climbed to the top bopped the life to make it fall. Then I dropped all the way to the ground hit the life and bounced on the speed shoes. Then I ran off. But then when I got to the first sloping hill thing Sonic did that thing where he just suddenly stops like he got caught on something.

But wait! It gets better! Then as I climbed the slope with Sonic running full speed because of the item, instead of walking across the hill, he just keeps running straight into the air at like a 45 degree angle. Sonic would not stop running and just kept speeding off into outer space. He passed the screen barrier and disappeared into I don't know where. It wasn't until like 15 seconds later that Sonic came hurling back down to earth and I miraculously landed on a evil chicken robot. Alas, the fun ended when I accidentally bounced into a giant propeller without any rings.

Unfortunately I was unable to recreate the glitch and therefore I do not have any pictures or videos to let you see just how funny it was. Just imagine Sonic running in a straight line at an uphill climb of about 45 degrees and heading straight into outer space. And he can't stop running. Hilarious.

yeah you basically was going faster than sonic's limit speed so therefore sonic's sprite got stuck in the ramp's sprite and basically the game forced sonic out at rapid speed... 

It's how speedrunners do level wrap glitches to complete levels really quickly. 

TheBWoods15 : You just activated the slope glitch which allows Sonic to maintain the angle of the last slope he touched. It can be recreated, but it's not easy

That's a pretty cool glitch you found. It's a lot more rewarding to find a glitch in a game like that than in something like Sonic 06 where the entire game is a glitch.

That is beautiful. It's cool how we can still find a bunch of odd glitches in games as old as this one.
