Wow, I cannot believe that I am rating a Mario game this low. Let me just say that Paper Mario Sticker Star is not a horrible game (though some might disagree.) The only thing wrong is that Nintendo and Intelligent got our expectations high with the last three paper Mario games, and then let us down.Every single one of the originals was near perfection of an rpg. The stories were epic, there was a very long playtime before beating the game, and there were a lot of challenging bits throughout the game. But the biggest part of these games to me, is that they all completed the story in such a way as to leave you completely satisfied. This game...not so much. Let's dive into it before I spoil everything.

Graphics: 9

The graphics are what you would typically expect from a Mario game: Fun, happy and colorful and sometimes a bit quirky. I love the way they designed the various stickers throughout the game. At the beginning of the game, you get some pretty weak stickers, and this is shown by the bandage on the sticker. But as the stickers get stronger, they look better and better. They get a splash of color added (pun intended!) or get bigger, and shinier! The best stickers are usually the shiny rainbow stickers. (Like the infinijump sticker which lets you jump on the enemy 100 times if you can make the timing. Later on in the game, you will also find enemies that are affected by higher power stickers, you can usually tell these guys from the rest because they are shiny, or rainbow shiny. Yeah, there really is not much to tell you about paper Mario graphics, that you wouldn't already know. But, I would definitely give the graphics a 9.

Sound: 9

Again, the sound in Mario games, always amazing. Whether its the music or the sound effects or character expressions. The sound for Paper Mario Sticker star is spotless. Every area has a theme music that fits it perfectly. The sound effects are clean and crisp. And the characters make their usually grunts, one-word expressions, and other noises. But there really isn't anything new to the sound department, just giving it the standard 9.

Addictiveness: 7

The game play mechanics of this game are sooooo much fun. I like the idea about using stickers to fight. (Next thing you know we'll be battling with Mario collectible cards!) But I also miss the partner and level up system. Progressing through the game really did not give you many new experiences. Although I will say the door stickers were sheer genius. Here's Nintendo, "Oh, let's just give the players a bunch of silhouette doors that they cannot open and not tell them about the secret door sticker that they can only find in one shop of the game! The game is a lot of fun to play through the first time, especially the haunted mansion, as it had the most surprises and gimmicks to be found anywhere in the game. But honestly, what is there after you complete the game. Not much to speak of. I even took the time to collect every item and every sticker in the game. Believe me, it was not easy! And what do you get for all that effort? A room where you can view all the enemies in the game. Enemies that you have already encountered and beaten!!! What is the point of that. After this point, game play is pointless. I mean, you could start a new game, but this really is not the kind of game to do that. I'm giving this game an addictiveness of 7 because it was a lot of fun to play through on the first try, and maybe a few years down the line I would be inclined to play through it again, but it just does not have a lot of after game content, to keep you coming back.

Story 6:

Come on Nintendo! After the epic story lines of Paper Mario: Thousand year Door, and Super Paper Mario (which the only paper Mario game to not have the goal being 'rescue the princess' the entire game). The story featured here is the same old Bowser plot to take over the mushroom kingdom. At least the Thousand Year Door had someone else kidnap the princess...and we even find out why at the end with one of the craziest turning points ever! Why, that game even showed Bowser's rage at someone else capturing the princess; and you even get to play through some levels as him. I even like the fact that they show bowser trying to get the stars, but he always seems to be a bit late. However, this game had none of that. The closest we get to a layered storyline would be when Kamek decided to mess with the poor wiggler and send his body sections running everywhere, each with a mind of its own. And that strange toad that seemed to be watching you from the overlook point in the poisoned forest. That was about as good as it got. I like the fact that at the end Kertsi does actually prove to be of some use after all, besides just yelling at you and never really appreciating all the work that you are doing trying to help her. Sadly, she dies. Spoiler:At the end of the game Mario wishes her back to life. Really? Just wishes her back? Ooookayyyy... In Super Paper Mario, at the end of the game, you lose tippi as her and count bleck are reunited as the couple and people they once were. When you get back in the game...no tippi! You actually have to buy a robotic imitation from that chameleon kid in the castle. That's what I love, story integrity. Let's face it nintendo has some lazy story writers. Sadly, about the best I can give this story is a 6.

Depth: 5

Most Paper Mario games are centered around exploration. Even Super Paper Mario, which was divided into chapters, needed tons of exploration as you flip back and forth between the dimensions to see things that you can only see in either one. But this game, was very linear and straightforward. There are two exceptions...the poison forest maze, where you have to figure out which is the right path, and the haunted mansion, with all the tricks that the boos played and the walls that they moved, these sections were fairly difficult and required some exploration. Also exploring noteworthy is the section where you have to catch all the wiggler's body segments. Finding them was the tricky part! But all in all, this game simply lacks the depth of its predecessors.

Difficulty: 6

Paper Mario: Sticker Star is a fairly easy game. The game play mechanics are fair, and the levels are straightforward. However, there is an issue that I would like to address...The relative obscurity of the item stickers that you collect throughout the game. Some bosses require you to use different items to block different attacks. But seriously, how was I supposed to know that the sponge was going to be my saving grace in the battle against the giant squid! Some of the bosses are tricky, not because they are difficult but because they require different items that you often arrive at the battle unprepared...which to me is a bit unfair. I mean, it's not like you get an unlimited supply that you can infinitely hold on to! But other than these strange boss battles, the game is pretty fair and straightforward. I was going to rate this a 5, but then I remember the pain in the butt boss battles, so difficulty gets a 6.

As much as I hate rating a Mario game this low, I truly feel that this is a fair estimation of the game, both to those that hate it for going of the beaten path of the Paper Mario series, and those that absolutely adore it (wait are there any people that do?) But anyways, in my opinion a 7 is about as fair as you can get for this game.

The little child in me that enjoys this game loves you and thanks you. As well as (I hope) the other people on the internet who claim to enjoy this game (there are dozens of us! DOZENS!!!).
