If you've got parents, ask them for money, if you're an adult, take the hit to your check book, or just tell your friend that you're going to get it soon and find a way to make some money, then get it to him.

What you can learn is "Don't promise stuff to people even if it is for their birthday unless you already have it in your possession."

it's not a fun thing to learn but you can figure it out now and save yourself a bunch of trouble down the road. Don't promise gifts unless you know you can get them or you already have them.
