Ever since last night, when Elie Wiesel passed away, I have been constantly thinking of Night, which is probably one of his most famous book. I read the book back in high school and I really liked reading it and seeing what this guy went through but came out even better. It got me to start thinking that there’s a lot of books out there about the Holocaust. They can teach us a lot and In some cases can be an enjoyable read as well. Which books based on the Holocaust would you recommend?

Along with Night I have also enjoyed the Maus graphic novels by Art Spiegelman.

Rose Under Fire is an excellent book! It's about a Woman named rose who is an airplane deliverer (I don't really remember the actual term) during WW2 who gets caught over Nazi-occupied France, and is sent to a woman's concentration by mistake. The book is written like a diary, and the parts in the concentration camp are written as if Rose was haveing flashbacks, It's really good!

A long time ago, I read a book called Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. I think that one's fairly good for young readers, so I would recommend it.

We read Night as well last year, but I prefer Anne Frank more than that.

Another Holocaust-based book (historical fiction though) that I read years ago, enjoyed, and would recommend is called The Devil's Arithmetic, by Jane Yolen.

From what I recall, the book is about a Jewish girl that got bored from listening to her relatives talk about the past, but then something happens at the religious event they were all attending and the girl ends up discovering what living in a death camp during World War II was like, and why those stories meant so much to everyone.

At some point, I plan to read this book again, if only to see if I would receive any new insights that I likely missed before because I read this book when I was really young (and hadn't really studied history yet).

While you've probably already seen the movie, Schindler's Ark is a really amazing book that goes along with the movie.

It's really fascinating and was writing really well.

I'd recommend it, top of my list.

I would recommend Auschwitz: The Nazis and the final solution by Laurence Rees. It's not a heartfelt personal story of a holocaust survivor so if that's what you're looking for it will probably not be your cup of tea. However it is one of the best books if not the best book I've read that gives you a historically insightful and accurate account of the whole event without feeling like you're being forced to read some sort of history textbook with plenty of quotes from people who experienced it. Another book for that specific historical period would be In their darkest hour also by Laurence Rees. It's not a book specifically about the holocaust but rather the entirety of world war 2 and contains interviews telling of the personal experiences of holocaust survivors, people who worked within the nazi regime and also other perspectives like those of people in the Soviet Union and the US to name a few. If you're looking to deepen your understanding of the entire event it's definitely a worthwhile and entertaining read.

The holocaust is a particularly touchy topic, I feel like it should be dealt with seriously so I'd probably only read ones that aren't fiction.

Fictional stories involving the holocaust, I don't really see the appeal.

That being said, I don't think I've ever read one based on the holocaust. I'll consider some of these suggestions though.
