Earlier today, one of the best hockey players ever, Gordie Howe passed away at the age of 88. What are some of your thoughts on him and his career? I never saw him play of course, but he's one of my 3 favorite players of all time.


He played 26 seasons in the NHL and 6 in the World Hockey Association. he has played more games than anyone in the history of the NHL, scored the 4th most points, 2nd in goals, has appeared in the All Star Game 23 times, won the Hart Memorial Trophy 6 times, has won the Stanley Cup with the Red Wings 4 times, and is regarded as the 3rd best player in NHL history.

   Sad to see such a legend go. Of course I never got to see him play, but all I've heard about how he was just as great off the ice as he was on the ice for such a long time. After the stroke he had a few years back, most seemed to think it was over for him. Then after the stem cell transplant he revived, he was feeling better than he had in a long time. This last season, for his 88th birthday, he was at The Joe where the crowd sang happy birthday, and you could tell that something was up. Turns out his dementia was getting worse, and I believe he was having trouble speaking. But the family has said that he died peacefully. We lost one of the best players to ever live, but he will not be forgotten.

zanderlex : Here's a silly question: How can he be a favorite player of yours if you're not from the Detroit area, you've never seen him play, and you probably had to google the number of Stanley Cups he won with the Wings? Could you name the other guys on the Production Line with him? Do you know what statistic is named after him?

Anyway, any time a guy gets a stat named after him because he's so awesome, he's automatically the number one greatest hockey player of all time. It's too bad he ended his NHL life in Hartford but if you gotta finish somewhere, the Whalers were a good group of guys.

We're hoping they name the LCA after him somehow and celebrate the legacy he has in this town. New stadium + passing of a legend = Change the naming rights. I'm looking at you, Mike.
