ok so my dad's philosophy is that scolding/punishing after every single little mistake only works on dogs and not children bc like come on people we're smart enough to be open to slightly more creative "don't do it again" reinforcement methods

to support his argument he cleaned up instead of making me do it so i could eat my pizza before it got cold and told me not to do it again so i could prove him right and that's what i'm going to do

but for future reference please do not attempt to slam dunk a container of hot sauce into the garbage can because if you miss it's not "cool" or "epic" it just explodes and the sauce goes all over the place

Oh, doing that with hot sauce is so last year, try slam dunking leftover jello.

Question, were you using the hot sauce on the pizza???? Or am I missing something?

I agree with that philosophy for the most part. It shouldn't be viewed as "discipline" for a child, but more so "correcting" bad behavior. From what research I've seen, spanking your kids or something similar doesn't work nearly as well as people think it does. Personally I think being creative with punishments is the best way to go. For example, I saw once that a kid would talk back to his mom all the time, so she had his hair cut where it looked like a clown (fluffy on the sides, bald on top). I can only imagine that put him in his place lol.

Of course not, hot sauce three pointers are where it's at Your dad's approach reminds me of my mom's. It worked great on my siblings and I, and I ended up following the same method when handling children myself. Now I do (and so did mom) discipline if that cautionary "don't do it again" doesn't take hold, but I feel like giving the kid a chance before scolding and/or punishing is favorable as it lets the kid know that you trust them and view them as people you're responsible for instead of subordinates you dominate. I know it always made me appreciate my mom a lot more than I would have had she been the opposite. It kind of gave the sense of support, like your parents knew you were a good kid and you just made an honest mistake.

Why dunk a bottle of hot sauce? And I would think that doing that is risky enough, even if you make it. Sometimes you need to be creative and sometimes you need the crap scared out of you. If that was me and I did that,I would have expected to grab a broom and dustpan immediately and clean it up without a word being said.

NintendoFanKimmy : I don't mean to get off topic here, but people seem to dislike my posts all the time. I don't care what they think, especially if they won't say anything to me directly lol.
Getting back on point... When I'm with my niece (she's 4), and she does something wrong, she responds much better if you just get on eye level and explain why what's she's doing isn't right over anything else. Granted she's still young enough that the occasional tantrum is to be expected, but it still amazes me how well she responds to being treated like a peer rather than a subordinate. It should also be noted I wouldn't physically punish her even if I was given the go ahead to do so. I don't understand how people see a difference between "assault" when you hit someone that isn't your kid, but it's acceptable and even encouraged sometimes to smack your kid around if they misbehave.
I said this in another post too, but I believe hitting kids sends the wrong message along the lines of "If someone does something you think is wrong, it's ok to hit them as well."

I laughed out loud when I read your story and then my wife laughed out loud when I told it to her.

Slam dunking any sort of sauce container is just a bad idea!

Also, I don't want to get into parenting styles too much but with teenagers especially you can't "punish" like you would a 5 year old. Teenagers know better than little kids when it comes to stuff like this and there isn't much point in handing out a punishment for stuff like this. It's not a big deal and shouldn't be treated like one.

However, I still think you should have cleaned it up since you made the mess but it was nice that he did it for you instead. I'm more of a "natural consequences" type of parent so I generally punish in a way that makes sense for the thing done wrong.

NintendoFanKimmy :  I'm a dad with two daughters and I agree with your dad about not punishing.  I reward successes.  I do instantly time-out any mistakes but my daughters are smart and learn quickly.

And I will slam dunk anything I want into the trash can.  I WILL do it at home and I'll enjoy doing it every time.  And I will clean the mess up because my wife will yell at me if I don't clean the mess up.

Or I get my daughters to help me clean the mess up because they need to learn how to clean things effectively.  Or something like that.  I dunno, I'll have to think it over.
