This sucks. Thankfully Japan is pretty used to getting earthquakes so is likely much more prepared for it. Still, dying to something like this has to suck.

I saw a documentary years ago that said that Japan isn't as prepared for quakes, instead they're more prepared against typhoons. This means the houses are heavy to withstand the powerful winds, something that becomes disastrous if the enemy is a quake.

Technically, that documentary should be a thing of the past, but I'm sure that beyond big cities, this rule still applies. It's logical on one side, since typhoons strike every year and quakes aren't frequent.

Nevertheless, sad news. I hope the number of deaths doesn't go that much up. It surely sucks, but there's nothing we can do against mother nature's fury.

Wow, 6.4 can be really bad in some areas, though honestly if only two people were killed as a result, then I would say that it went pretty well, most of the bigger ones will result in way more deaths and injuries.

This is pretty sad...I mean hasn't that country been through enough already as it is? I just hope things would actually get a bit more better for them. As I am sure most people haven't recovered from what happened years ago. So to have this one happen would bring up painful memories for them. :/

Many places have had pretty disastrous earthquakes.  We are killing our home to let the rich become more rich and the poor working harder to let the rich become more rich.  It is already common knowledge that the united states of murica is frakking and destroying much of its ecosystem and creating devastating oil spills that are killing us.  Not only the oil spills, but the frakking itself is setting off multiple massive earthquakes around north america.  I think Ohio is experiencing an insane amount of earthquakes due to frakking, as well as several other states.  The Canada pipe line has ruptured...imagine that....spilling and destroying untold amounts of life already...gonna stop there

So, the numbers have been updated since I first heard about this. I'm now seeing 9 dead and over 700 injured. These number will likely continue to rise as the injured are taken to hospital and some die there and other injured are accounted for.

This is pretty rough.

Yeah I read this in the news last night. I was so glad that did not have a Tsunami like they did last time. Japan is used to this as they are in the ring of fire. But its sad to see death and destruction. So as a Christian prayers for Japan. Earlier this week they had another earthquake with similar magnitude in Myanmar so prayers for that region as well.

I just heard that when I was in the gym. My thoughts go out to them, but there is one thing they will always have is their honor and civility. No matter how awful things are, they will rebound. Most of them will not loot stores, they are very civilized and will work even harder to rebuild.

EX Palen : Really? I am surprised; those pagodas seem to withstand anything . Seriously now, considering the amount of wealth this country produces it is certainly in a better position than Haiti or Indonesia. Take a look at yesterday's earthquake in Ecuador. The death toll is already over 200 and, from what I know about the country,  rebuilding these houses will take a while since the country's wealth is a fraction of Japan's.

I've read accounts of at least 4 or 5 other 6+ magnitude earthquakes over the last couple weeks. Seems like a lot happened together.

I also read that southern Japan moved by about 3 feet and rose about 9 inches up. That an earthquake could move an entire island that much seems unreal to me.

janus : I was thinking the same thing in response to what he said. Haiti probably had thousands of deaths from the earthquake itself and then the destruction that came after. Disease and starvation probably took out as many or more as died during the earthquake itself.

That less than a dozen people die from a similar magnitude earhtquake in Japan shows how much better prepared they are for them.
