That's a picture that is similar to what my wife and I built today. We had a bunch of 2X4's left over from tearing down a wall in our basement and we decided to start a garden. All we've done so far is built the frame itself. We still need to add dirt inside and then we can start planting our garden. We've already got a mini-garden started in our kitchen where a bunch of things have started growing in little tiny pots that you can just plant straight into the ground. We're pretty excited about this and hopefully it goes well. I've never grown a garden myself. We had one when I was a kid but my parents took care of it more than I ever did. I always did enjoy the fresh peas or tomatoes though. That was fun.

Once we've got it finished I'll probably take a picture of it to show off and then as plants start really growing I'll show those off too. It's pretty exciting.

lol I looked at the picture and was like "Nice" and then saw that it wasn't yours and was "boo"

I kinda had a garden once at school, when we had to grow vegtables over the summer and it was hard work, but in the end it's all worth it, except if everything dies and you're left with nothing. But never mind that, good luck!

zanderlex : yeah, ours isn't quite as nice and I was feeling lazy about taking a picture of it. It's started raining outside right now so we wouldn't have a good picture. That's more or less what ours looks like though I don't think our wood was cut quite the same length . Some of our pieces I cut by hand myself with a hand saw so it isn't perfect. Doesn't need to be perfect though in order to work. If I wanted something pretty I would have paid someone to do it for me instead.

Put a big piece of plexiglass over it for the first few days to act like a greenhouse. That was my science fair project

But gardens are fun, I have one of my own and I like growing things.

I hope your things grown instead of die

Barathemos : I think we were going to use a clear plastic tarp instead but we did have a plan to do that.

We've got stuff growing already though so I don't know if we'll really need to do that. We started mini pots of different vegetables about 3 weeks ago and many of them are needed to be planted into deeper soil. That's likely going to happen Monday afternoon. Should be pretty straightforward and likely will involve the kids too since it is part of school for them now.

One of my good friends is a gardener, and I can't lie - I love going to her house in the summer because she's all for giving out fresh veggies. If I had the patience and persistence, I'd definitely do it.

Don't be surprised if you suddenly build another box, or 2 lol. She's got like 4 or 5 boxes I think - it takes up most of her backyard. But it definitely beats going to the store I bet.

Did anything motivate you to do this?

plasticinsanity : the main motivation was teaching my kids about gardening and growing plants and stuff. We started little tiny pots with various different vegetables in them that my daughters got to plants themselves and now that they are starting to really grow we either needed to end the experiment or transplant them into a real garden space.

And I expect we will have another 1 or 2 in the coming years depending on how we do and what grows well.

geeogree : I think that's an awesome idea. Are you going to give them specific chores to help out as well? I also understand that you're going to proceed with homeschooling, and I think this is also a great opportunity to teach about sustainability (I feel like I had a point I was going with here but I've lost it, so just take from that what you will).

My niece has actually been sort of interested in gardening. If I didn't have so many neighborhood cats that come into my hard, I'd let my mom start up a mini-garden in the little bit of free space I do have (my parents have their backyard completely layered in brick - beautiful to look at, but no grass lol).

plasticinsanity : We will probably show them how to built a support for something like peas or tomatoes. I also expect we will teach them how to weed the garden. I expect this is going to be a year over year sort of thing so they don't need to learn it all right now. I think it is a skill worth having though. I know a lot of people who don't know a thing about having a garden and growing plants.

We will also probably talk about sustainability but not likely this year. My oldest is only 7 and may not fully understand that concept for a while. We might introduce it in more basic ways now and then more fully explain it as they all get older.

That's the nice thing about homeschooling. We can teach them more or less what we want as they grow up. There is a lot of stuff that happens in schools that is a big waste of time.

geeogree : Do you plan on homeschooling them for just elementary years, or until they graduate?

Peas and tomatoes are awesome choices (feel free to send me some). Which other vegetables are you going to grow?

plasticinsanity : we're not sure. If they do well we will likely keep doing it. My wife and I are both University grads so I doubt there is any topic that between the 2 of us we can't understand that a high schooler would need to know and include all the resources available + the internet and I don't see a problem really.

We've got like 10 or 12 different things. I can't think of what they all are but likely when we replant I'll have a list of them all.

Awesome I love to garden, I have done it for awhile and I don't know if this is what you are looking for but I will try to offer advice.

First of all, I would look up my plant hardiness zone this will give you a clue when is your climate's growing season.

Second, know the last frost and first frost of your area. Lets use my area as an example. I'm in Zone 7. My last frost is typically around April 9th and my first frost is November 2nd. So climatology I can expect frost free mornings from April the 10th to November 2nd. Now granted frost could occur in that time frame but the threat is low.

Third, use really good dirt that has nutrients in it. Me personally I use Miracle Grow gardening mix it has good nutrients to help feed the plants

Fourth, during dry spells its important that you water either in the early morning or evening. Typically garden's and yard's need about 1-1.5 inches of rain water per week. If its over 90 degrees and hot and humid they may need more.

Fifth, bugs will be attracted to plants that is a given. But if you plant a few Marigold's it will keep some bugs off your plants as Marigold's produce a deterrent to some bugs.

As you know I also like weather and gardening depends on the climate. Here is some last frost dates for major cities

Central Plains of Alberta Canada (Calgary-Edmonton) Middle May- Middle September

Toronto Canada- Early May to early October

Montreal Canada- Mid May to late September

Boston MA- Late April-early October

New York, NY- Late April to around October the 10th

Baltimore MD- Late April to mid October

Cincinnati OH- Late April to Mid October

Pittsburgh PA- Early May to early October

Louisville Ky- Mid April to Late October

Tuscaloosa AL- April 6th to November 5th

St. Louis MO-  Late April to late October

Denver CO- mid May to Mid October

Cheyenne WY- Late May to Mid October

Billings MT- Late May to Mid October

Good job elder slime, now you have a place to plant all of your plants. Though how do slime's even plant things? All jokes aside good job and I hope you use that Garden Box a lot which is probably what you are going to do.

So, we progressed in our construction of the garden box. We've got dirt in it now. Took 2 60 pound packages to fill it and I think we could have used part of a third but whatever. We'll see how it goes for now and try again with more next year if we need it.

Once we got all the dirt in there it was time to transplant all the plants we had started growing. I now have a better idea of what we've got since we divided the whole box up. These are the ones I remember: cucumber, squash, pumpkin, watermelon, peas, carrots, tomatoes, onions.... that's all I can think of right now. I know there are more but I haven't got the full list in front of me. I would also have pictures but I don't have my phone with me right now. I'll post pictures later to show the final product. Maybe the grass around the box will be a bit greener in a few days and I can get some nicer shots.

Still, pretty excited to be starting a garden. I imagine we won't plant as much variety next year depending on how things grow for us this year.

We grow tomatoes in the backyard. I think home grown food tastes the best. I grew up with a friend who had a huge garden in their backyard, and the stuff his mom cooked with all of it was phenomenal.
I want to see how it turns out by fall more than anything. Find out if the green blob has a green thumb or not

How is the garden now? Just thought I'd ask since I've been super curious about it ever since I first saw this thread (and no, I'm not trying to rush you to post pictures or anything, just thought it would be neat to see how the cucumbers, squash, pumpkins, etc. are coming along). lol

Good luck! Always nice to see materials being re used instead of being burned or thrown into the trash! Good thinking, really, and I hope that your garden does well and all that, not sure how far along it is by now. The pots are pretty cool too, I didn't know that any one made things that you could plant that easily.

Good luck again with the garden! Home grown food always tastes the best! (Probably because free stuff is always better)
