So I’m about to wrap up by first year of university! I was really anxious about it when I started but I kinda feel comfortable now. Somewhat. Maybe. More comfortable then I was at the beginning at least.

I’m doing Media Studies right now which I really feel at home in. My professors seem to like me, and I get to write essays about video games! I’ve always been into video games but was made fun of a bit as a kid for it, so I’m glad that now it’s a part of what I do for school, around people who take games seriously. I really like that I can be honestly be excited and proud of what I wrote, rather than write just based on the teacher’s criteria like I did in high school. I’m quite happy here.

However, anxiety still here. Dysphoria is manageable at least. Inertia has been a major pain me getting schoolwork done but I’m still fighting through it and getting all my stuff at a reasonable quality.

I’m excited that I have a whole bunch of video games to play and things I want to write. I’m really excited for the future and I don’t feel that nearly enough. Now what I'm not looking forward to are exams.

Tancora : That's awesome, congratulations! It's not always easy completing your first year, that adjustment period can get rather nasty, but it sounds like you're doing good. I know anxiety is terrible, but if your studies are a pain then maybe find a study group to help you out? You can meet some... rather interesting people that way.

But yeah, Media Studies sounds like a really interesting class. Do you have an idea about what you want to major in? Or are you undecided for now?

Tancora : Be careful. I became so wrapped up with video games that I had less time for friends and my grades dropped. I haven't dropped out of college, but it's so much harder to complete classes now because of it. I still enjoy playing video games, but right now, they're just as much a distraction as a help. Playing too much will cause you to lose focus of important things. And playing too little, you run the risk of letting stress take over your life. So there's a balance you've got to make.

But to be honest, you sound a lot like me. I dealt with a lot of anxiety issues, I loved to write, and I loved to play video games. My first year of college was probably my easiest (and most enjoyable) year. If I hadn't become so wrapped up in other, less important things, I probably would have kept enjoying it even more than I did before. But I didn't. So I lost myself.

Writing is one of the things I take confidence in. I've made a number of great works that I feel deserve wider recognition, not because they are mine, but because they are unique and inspiring. I'm just a writer. It's my duty to make great stuff because it brings me joy. I wish I had stuck with writing more. I have done some writing recently, but not to the extent I did before. I have several ideas for children's books that I believe are brilliant and have a shot at wide recognition and acclaim. I say this not to brag, but to point out that I feel I have a duty to flesh them out and have them published. I have so many regrets. But I'm working on it.

Anyhoo, I hope you won't come to regret so much like me. Make the most of your life! You can do it!

supersam4ever08 :

Thanks! Right now I'm thinking of continuing on with media studies stuff (my school offers it as a major) but nothings set in stone right now so maybe things will work out differently.

A study group is a good idea. Right now my friends and I just kinda Skype while we work on very different stuff for very different classes sometimes. It would be cool to meet new people working in the same kind of thing.

supernerd117 :

Yeah, it can be a really easy to get  too into the games, especially since they're right there on my computer and the Internet. Striking a balance between doing assignments, going to class, meeting my friends, writing stuff, and playing games is important but really difficult. I've been managing so far (better then I thought I would) but my workload will increase as time goes on so I better be prepared for that. The biggest pain is finding time to write stuff since that alone can take as much energy as I put in to school. But I hope over the next few months before the next school year I can really pick it up again and do something I'm proud of. I hope for the best with your writing! Thanks.

Good to know that you are managing to balance your studies and social life. However, as supernerd said, you must also be able to control the urges to play the video games. I, myself, have had such troubles in High School, which is not too different from colleges/universities, even if you take Media Studies. Treat each class with the utmost of priority over everything else, but you do not have to abandon your natural life.

That is why we have breaks from classes. Get your studies done first, then the rest will follow. Sometimes it is easier said than done, but not impossible.

Nice, that's great! Sounds like media studies is every gamer's dream class I might know how you feel with the anxiety, I have issues with that quite a bit so far in high school.

Good luck with your exams! Hope you keep having fun at university.

Tancora : That's awesome! You've already almost completed one year of college! I wish I got to write essays about video games like you do, and get my teachers to like me. I hope your exams will go good, and so does the rest of your education!
