Am I able to change my username color, or do I have to be an elite member or something to do that? 

You must either have done a special occassion such as a contest, or you must be a Vizzed Elite to change your username color.

Either you win it through a contest or auction, or you can have it changed when you're in the Donation Top 3 I believe.
I don't think Elite is a requirement but most (if not all) people who get a username color change become elite thanks to their donations to the site.

Auctions of course being an exception, I don't think they're elite+ only.

Last I checked, you only have such an option if David offers it to you for making a huge contribution to the site. You could try donating a large some of money, but I think it's more about the spirit of giving to the community than it is just flat out buying a custom username.

No, they aren't elite only, I had mine changed just before I became an elite when i was trusted, but of course I instantly became elite after because of what I donated. When I asked almost 2 years ago, David told me that you had to be in the top 5 for most donations to get it.

There was an auction once but that was well over a million Viz and the rest were all really important people like the 2 admins.

Of the people with custom username colors, here are how they got them, as far as I remember. This isn't comprehensive, I may be mistaken on a couple.

camkunimura, xxdougiefreshx, dragonslayer444, zanderlex, mitchelw, Singelli, Cyro Xero, lorreleibailey, Snowdeath, gtwalq - Donations

Tyrian Delirium - Auction, paid a ludicrous amount of Viz (over 1,000,000).

tRIUNE, geeogree, legacyme3 - Contributions to the site (in all three cases, the users did something major for the board or RGR. In the first two cases, they also had donations factored in. In the last case, the name only shows up as a custom color once every so often, I forget the exact variable).

Outside of those names, anyone with a color other than the blue/pink variants for male/female (and gray for gender neutral names, although this is very rare in itself), on the age range line, have them because of a position on the site.

For example, Jordanv78 and Vanelan are global moderators, and all globals are given the dark brown color (if male. If female, it will be a bright red, almost pink). Davideo7 is the owner obviously and the only person who will ever have a yellow name, probably.

I believe that the usernames become lighter as you post more as well.
