Well, is that time in the year in Florida where it is finally starting to feel somewhat like winter. It is 48 degrees Fahrenheit today and I am sick! I got the cold right after my birthday on January 2nd and I have not kicked it all out yet. NyQuil and DayQuil would be my usual help right about now but, I am going back to home remedies instead. For a sore throat, I would gargle with a cup of luke water and a lot of salt in it for about 2 minutes- I tend to put a lot of salt just hoping to speed up the "healing" process and it can sometimes be very nasty lol but, so far it has worked for me all these years. For this cold, I am using a home remedy from my German neighbor, she gave me these two natural ingredients to use: basically mixed 10 drops of Grape Seed Extracts with 5 drops of Oregano Oil Extract and mix it on any liquid preferably Orange Juice- it tastes worst than it smells gosh it is terrible but, so far I have been feeling better, I get more sleep at night and my nose is less runny but, it is a high price to pay lol. What home remedies have you grown with? Have they worked for you?
I would love to hear how similar and diverse these remedies are from different regions.

jlove92 : I remember back when I was about 8 years old I had an upset stomach one day and my dad gave me some white vinegar mixed with baking soda it tasted terrible but at least it made me feel better. he also told back when he was a kid one day he had a sore finger but because he grew up in a large family they could not afford to see a doctor,a customer on his paper route told him that he should try putting some oats and a bandage on his finger and that the oats would get rid of the bad so he went home and tried it he told me that it worked and that his finger was eventually healed. in my opinion I believe that home remedies work a lot better then all the pills that doctors prescribe .

jlove92 : oregano oil is really good for you. It is REALLY strong to drink without something like orange juice to take the edge off but I agree it works really well. Any time I am sick I take the same thing. However, my wife has little capsules that you can put the oil into so that you don't have to drink it but you can take it like any other pill. My burps afterwards are pretty potent though

no 8120 : Thank you for sharing. I started this threat because for a year or so I have been having a lot of health issues and I have spent thousands that I basically do not have for incompetent doctors to tell me they made an error reading the results and a year later I am still up in the air. I have heard about white vinegar for the stomach- that's great to hear that it does work; I will hands down. I too agree, I think home remedies are better. I personally believe that the pharmaceutical industry does not necessarily have the best interests for us.

geeogree : Yes, the odor itself is very strong and the taste is just uugh but, it does help. That is a great idea I had not thought of that at all. I hate whent he oregano oil touches my tongue so I try to swallow it all quickly. Oh how could I forget the burps? lol Also, getting the small off the cups is a challenge lol.

I do hope you meant FARENHEIT, because 48 Celsius is unheard of in Florida (at least, when it comes to recorded temperatures).

Anyway, my mother-in-law always suggests a mix of honey, raw onion and vinegar to soothe sore throat and coughing. Honey always takes it and it seems to be pretty effective.

janus : Hahaha thank you for catching that! I have the temperature in my work computer as Celsius and time as military time so, forgot to change Celsius to Farenheit when making the conversion. That would be awful; I could not sustain my life here lol.

Onion??? Really!! I am dying of a cough here for days- I am seriously trying this today. Do you know quantities in specific - specially onions since I am not too much of a fan of them. I am really looking to switch to natural remedies as I have liver problems and these chemicals is just a ticking bomb. Thanks for sharing. I will be trying this for my cough and saving this threat for future reference lol.

Honey always does his recipes (for medicine or in the kitchen) very approximately without measuring. I would say about twice as much honey than vinegar, and maybe a quarter of a small onion. You can always make more for later, it will not go bad. Just make sure that the honey you take does not crystalize; liquid honey tends to become solid after a while.

I usually do over the counter actually. Although for a sore throat,I did gargle with warm salt water or drink hot tea.

As for headaches,I would say a dark room and a cool washcloth. But I usually take aspirin.

Tea with lemon juice and honey. Lemon is really good for ... well, basically everything (skin, etc). I find it helps soothe my throat.

Well I personally never got those kinds of medicine, most of it was prescribed from a doctor of some sort. But if your mother gave you all those things, I'm sure she has it in your best interest.....even if they are very horrible to consume.

Oldschool777 I always try the gargling with warm water and salt for sore throats- usually takes me a few days to get rid of it- more than I would like to be honest. I have tried over the counter but, again takes too long- few days meaning two-three weeks. Makes me miserable at work since I mostly work on the phone all day. Headaches- I'll try that. I usually take a pain killer and go on with gaming or what not and well that's not very helpful lol. I'll try helping the pain killer do its job by turning everything off. Thanks!

plasticinsanity I have heard from a few users now about tea- to be honest, I haven't try tea much, found it to be nasty but, I see that there's a lot you can add to it to make it taste better so I actually bought a whole box of Lipton Tea to experiment with and bought a bottle of honey- need to buy another one as I just drank it like that right off the bottle lol. But thank you I didn't think of adding lemon to it so I'll get that as well. I agree with the lemon being good. I drink a lot of lemonade and recently finished a bottle of Cherry Limeade- sour as it can be but, supposedly good for cleansing your body so I just finished a gallon.

18mlivingston Yes, she did. She is great. In my old town, home remedies are used most, specially from plants and spices, herbs and fruits. I have a list of plants to buy from the Farmer's Market to work on some home remedies and just have them stored for when I need them- once I am settled from moving I will work on having a little remedy garden Hence why I made this post to gather remedies from others!

My mom used to have so many home remedies it's not even funny. Some worked, but some didn't. One that worked and definitely helped was honey and ginger mixed together, heated enough so it warmed your throat but didn't burn it. It does wonders for sore throats. Also, one time, when I was down with a really bad flu, an Indian family gave us a herbal tea that literally soothed the symptoms immensely by the next day. For the life of me I can't remember what it was called, but boy, did it help! They eventually brought like a whole crate of it so we didn't run our until last year.

Hope you feel better!
