My dad has scheduled (and paid) for him and mom to go on a romantic getaway for a few days. It'll be their first time having something like that ever since before I was born! I've never heard of parents doing that until now, which makes me wonder if it's such a rare thing. We usually go on a family vacation once a year, but I have never heard of them going on a vacation by themselves.

Have your parents (or if you are a parent, have you) ever gone on a romantic getaway before? Do you think that's something you'd like to do with your spouse/future spouse?

My wife and I have gone on more trips just the 2 of us than we have gone on as a whole family.

I think it is very important for parents to get some alone time like that as well as taking the family on trips. Family vacations are very different than these kinds of romantic getaways.

My wife and I went to a small mountain town about a year ago for our 10 year anniversary. It wasn't anything big of crazy special but it was a nice weekend away for just the 2 of us. A chance to go to bed and wake up with nothing to do but take care of ourselves.

geeogree : I agree. My dad has to work very hard as a store manager for 10+ hours a day, 6 days a week. He needs a break from that hectic schedule, especially around Christmastime. Thankfully his store was closed on Christmas day but that was the only day he got a break.

The place my parents are going is also not crazy special, like a beach. It's more like a camping site but unlike a regular camping site, there's so much more to do there.

yeah, some people I know seem to think that you need to fly somewhere exotic in order to have a nice getaway but sometimes just a place outside of your normal routine gets you far enough away that you can relax.

Also, I don't like being so far away from my kids that I can't come home if need be. I went on a cruise about 3 years ago and missed my kids so bad sometimes that it actually made the trip tough to be on.

Still, it is worth doing just to refresh. Most of the people on here would have parents who are going rather than being the parents going - don't resent the fact that your parents are going somewhere together. Be glad they are still married and want to go somewhere together. That's a good sign

My parents went on their first romantic getaway over 15 years after their honeymoon - yes, their situation was THAT rough. However with their lack of communication it ended being another occasion where both would end up arguing for bits and nothing. Maybe we (the children) had something to do with the stress... Anyway now that we are all out of the house it seems to be a little better.

janus : Oh wow, that sounds awful. It stinks when parents don't even communicate that much. I think kids very often have to do with parents' stress, especially when the kids don't behave themselves that well. My parents used to be really stressed often because my sister and my brother both caused trouble. Now it isn't so bad.

My parents have been going on more of these type of getaways since my siblings and I moved out of the house.
They go somewhere really nice at least once a year for their anniversary and I have a feeling I am not gonna see much of them when they finally retire.

My wife and I have done trips with just the two of us to escape the normality of life.  We go to small towns or the tropics to enjoy each other and no distractions.  We don't need a lot of excitement, just the relationship, usually sunshine, maybe an ocean and we're pretty satisfied.

I'm surprised your parents didn't go on anything until now.  My parents would take off once a year for a while and leave us kids with either grandparents or leave us on our own when we were old enough to run the house.  My sister and I generally got along and we were safe and smart about things so our parents could escape and not have any concerns about what we were up to.

That is awesome and something I would definitely do in my own relationship. We have had about 5 family vacations. Since my dad passed away there wasn't much there but, my mom did go out once in a blue moon with her then partner. I think this is very important in order to continue to strengthen the relationship.

As far as my couple is concerned, we're still looking forward to take our "official" honeymoon taking the Rocky Mountaineer. It's an antique train running through the Canadian Rockies, going through either Jasper or Banff, towards Vancouver or Edmonton/Calgary. I really can't wait to do it!

I'm sure that my parents have been on one at least some point in their lifetime. I think they actually did before I was in my mom's belly. I'm pretty sure it was either Las Vegas, Nevada or somewhere in Hawaii. I think it was Hawaii, but I could be wrong.

My parents will take off for a night to the city for themselves, but they've never gone off on a romantic adventure just the 2 of them. I wanna say that they went on a 3-day roadtrip by themselves, buuuut I'm pretty sure that was just my dad, so I don't think so.

We've never really had the extra money for it, and to be frank, my dad's not exactly the "romantic" type.  But he's been opening up to it more so maybe now that my sister and I are grown up they will.
