If people want to celebrate the Native American cultures then make a NEW day for that. Don't try and take away the discovery of the American continents as if it didn't happen.

And let's stop blaming Columbus for the things that other people did after he came to America.

Oh, and let's also stop pretending that the Native Americans were a super peaceful group of people that never hurt anyone until the Europeans showed up. That's such a rewrite of history that it is laughable that people believe it.

Columbus discovering the North American continent is a misconception to begin with. The Vikings first did quite a bit before and even had some settlements there. So yeah while Columbus discovering it himself played a bigger role he was not the first to do so. That said I agree it's somewhat of a moot thing with how many other things there are going on, but if people cannot agree, why not make it a day to celebrate both aspects? Or at the very least let people celebrate what they want? I don't get why the government needs to make it official what you're supposed to celebrate for it to actually matter.

geeogree :

Columbus didn't actually discover America. The Vikings knew it was here a long time ago. Moreso, when Columbus arrived, he thought it was India. That's why Native Americans are also called American Indians. He thought the world was about a third of it's actual size.

So Columbus isn't all too great.

That's nothing new - it doesn't change the fact that if Columbus hadn't made the voyage that the "re"-discovery of America might have taken even longer to accomplish. Either way, Columbus made the voyage that started the colonization of America. Vikings visiting America earlier and having a handful of settlements in Newfoundland or where ever they did doesn't really constitute compare to what happened because of Columbus's voyage.

Zlinqx : because some people want to tell you what you can and can't do and even enlist the government to help make that happen.

Honestly most of what kids learn about Christopher Columbus and what he did (or didn't do) is a lie and really he should not be celebrated. Teach the kids the truth about what happened and we will all be better off.

While I technically have no right to argue, as I don't live in America, I still think it should be Columbus Day.

After all, Columbus traveled there in a time where Spain was at the top of the world, and after we lost that spot, the UK came over and claimed most of the US. It is rightfully Columbus who made the US what they are right now. Without him and his travels, who knows how long would have passed before someone else decided to imitate the Viking's route into Newfoundland.

It's okay if people wants to celebrate the native american cultures, but suppressing Columbus Day is the same as denying the origins of their society. Our national day, for example, celebrates a defeat, but still it's a defeat that shaped our nation into what it is right now, and the same goes for Columbus and his (re)discovery.

A lot of people don't know about how cruel, tyrannical and genocidal Christopher Columbus was. He could easily be classified as a mass murderer and was one of the most successful slave traders there ever was.

I personally do not like Columbus day. He was a murder and did horrible things to people. On my Mom's side I'm Dutch and Cherokee descent. On my fathers side I'm viking descent.

Besides he is given credit for discovering America. It has been proven he did not discover America and he was not the first European person to land in the Americans. Erickson the Red and his Vikings landed in what is Canada almost 500 years before Columbus did. There is strong evidence even before Erickson the Red that there was a tiny branch of land between Russia and Alaska. Supporters of this argument argue that Russians may have crossed into what is today Alaska.  This is debated though, but we do know that Erickson the Red landed in North America. Thus he would be one of the early Europeans to land in North America.

So I thank Columbus should not be credited with being the first when he wasn't. Also as others pointed out the Natives were here first. Yet Columbus did horrible things to them.

I personally believe that all the Renaming and editing of Holidays and the names they use needs to stop, Columbus day needs to stay Columbus day, and on a side note people need to get over the taking offense to everything. It's not a "Holiday" tree, There is no other winter time holiday that uses a tree, it's a god dang Christmas tree, people need to grow a backbone and not take offense to everything, so why does it matter if we celebrate the European finder (I consider Lief before "European") of America. It's just a holiday, and there's no reason to change anything about it, if you want to call it something else, go ahead, but leave it alone.

pikadude1228 : Actually, you're wrong. Both the ancient Roman/Greek festival of saturnalia and the ancient Babylonian Mardukite celebration of zagmuk both used alarmingly similar decorations as evergreen trees adorned with lit tapers and apples as balls and holly decked halls. Otherwise, I wholly agree with you.

I meant no modern day holiday, that more than 5% of the global population celebrates, uses a tree, and that it''s name is not a Holiday tree. So just because someone takes offense to something doesn't mean we should change it.
