So, this is kind of like a health update and a little bit more.

I plan on joining the gym today because I want to get healthy and all that so I'm going to start today.

What does that have to do with my legs? Well, I started training my legs yesterday. I normally walk a lot, at least 5 miles a day but yesterday I took things to the next level and walked the 3rd most I ever did in a day. I walked more than 24000 steps which is just over 10.5 miles. Would have showed a picture but I can't from my phone.

What am I training for? Well, hopefully, next year I will be running (er, walking) in the New York City marathon.

I can easily walk the full distance at my normal pace with no trouble but need to work a bit if I want to do that within the time limit they give. Next month I will begin the application process and start saving up for all the fees, which is just under $300.

I think it would be impressive if you ran (or walked ) the NYC marathon.
However, you won't find me there unless I am a spectator. xD

I hate running

Great job on making it a point to get healthy and take better care of yourself! That's awesome that you are already walking, but I wouldn't call that "training your legs" Walking is more like a low intensity cardio workout.

The most steps I've ever walked (According to my current phone) was on June 16th. I walked 29,046

Although I do much more vigorous training for my legs as I usually do 2x a week leg days when at the gym. Usually squats, lunges, that sort of thing. Last time I checked my 12x max for Leg Press I did 760lbs.

Let me just warn you that walking 10 miles is nowhere near going the full 26.  Just because you walk 10 miles and feel fine, don't think it means you can triple it and be just peachy.  The body starts doing worse and worse at an exponential rate, especially when you're in the competitive environment of a marathon.

Keep training, focus on dropping some weight, learn to eat on the run/walk, and add speed work like sprints to a work-out and you'll build enough strength to get through and actually enjoy the race.  Most people struggle the last six miles, hit exhaustion or failure the last two miles and then the race isn't even fun.

Good luck!

10 miles is one of the longest I've walked, but nowhere near my number one for a day. As long as I have my music I will be fine.

My problem isn't how long I can walk but how quickly I can. My pace would finish the marathon after the time limit.

If I can get to the point where I can jog like the 1st mile and then do my normal pace I would make up some time.

Thought I would give a brief update on how things at the gym are going. Today is my 4th day going and I think things are going great, my favorite machine is the chest press and in 3 days I went from being able to do 30 pounds 10 times to being able to do 50 pounds 25 times. My goal for that is to be able to do 70 pounds at least 5 times by the end of next week.

I think you meant, "Y'all can't handle my FEET." Last summer I had a short-term contract for a job near Seattle and I walked to and from my job (about 6 km each way). Within THREE days I had infected blisters on both feet... and I had nearly-new sneakers.

When it comes to leg workout nothing beat biking.

But anyway I wish you luck in your training; WALKING 42 km is like walking the length on Manhattan. I do not think I would be able to do it! Be VERY careful with leg exercises; squats can lead to lower-back pain if you are not careful and lunges can easily make you lose your balance.

That's awesome! Like someone said above me, I'm also a huge fan of squats and lunges. Cardio (walking, eliptical, etc) is great, but strength training is amazing for toning up. Just be sure you stretch after - I keep forgetting and I have muscle knots in my legs. '

zanderlex : If your gym has a firm roller, I highly recommend using it.

It's also good to do a few stretches such as toe-touches. I get lazy with it sometimes and then I pay for it lol

zanderlex : You don't *have* to, but it's highly recommended.

I also do strength training such as squats, lunges, etc. I used to be that "weak little girl" when I was younger, so I love being able to use weights in any way I can.  Because of this, I find I get a lot of muscle knots especially in my legs, so I'm trying to use the roller before/after my workout.

Are you doing any other leg exercises?

That is good zanderlex. You have not broken one of the bigger commandments in the gym.

"Thou shalt not skip leg day."

But before I had a car,I used to walk everywhere,to school almost 2 miles away,to the corner store, and the flea market.
