Interesting new possible technology. Has its limitations of course but still interesting possibilities.

Seems kinda like fiber optics...definitely sounds interesting, but I wonder how someone could encode visible light signals to make a secure connection.

The only thing that bothers me about this article is this paragraph:
"One of the big advantages of li-fi is the fact that, unlike wi-fi, it does not interfere with other radio signals, so could be utilised on aircraft and in other places where interference is an issue."

Wi-Fi can be and is used on aircraft and in hospitals. ^^;

Probably causes cancer.

EDIT

"But the technology also has its drawbacks - most notably the fact that it cannot be deployed outdoors in direct sunlight, because that would interfere with its signal.
Neither can the technology travel through walls so initial use is likely to be limited to places where it can be used to supplement wi-fi networks, such as in congested urban areas or places where wi-fi is not safe, such as hospitals."

If it can't move through walls, and can't be taken outside, isn't just as limited in mobility as hooking in an ethernet cord...?

This seems interesting...But if it can't be in the light or travel through walls that really limits it's usefulness. And it can't go through walls either. So it's going to be tested in...hospitals and congested urban areas...Those have a lot of walls in them, guys. Why not like a coffee shop or something?

But new inventions are always really cool. I hope they improve on this someday.

I wonder what the character limit on this thing is.

From reading the replies so far, I'm glad that I'm not the only one who is thinking of how stupid this sounds.

It does sound stupid. While the increased speed may be very welcomed, if it has such limitations I'm afraid it won't become as widespread as wi-fi.

If it can't be used on open environments, this has nearly no future. It could be used in coffee shops, but not on the terrace. The increased speed means nothing if it's this limited, so wi-fi is here to stay for a long time.

You're assuming a limited source to start from.... what if this was integrated into every light in your home? Then as you move from room to room every light source would be a connection meaning as long as the light is on in the room you are in you would have a connection.

I don't think it would ever totally replace wifi as there are situations where wi-fi would be superior (like outside obviously) but I would totally use this in my own home if all I really had to do was replace a few light bulbs here and there.

Great idea, but, I'm worried as o how companies will try to cash in on it.Do you think corporations like Microsoft want us to have this kind of speed without paying a hefty price?I highly doubt it.....But, other than that, it's great
