I'm a Mega Man fan and player. I would recommend the NES ones. But I would start with Mega Man 2 or 3. Mega Man I has lots of glitches and is very difficult. 2 and 3 is what made the series so popular.  The SNES ones are good too. But the NES are the originals and will introduce you to what the series is about.

If you're totally new to the series, I'd recommend Mega Man 2. It's probably the easiest in the series. At least, on Normal Mode. It's also got some of the most memorable weapons and stages in the series. It's what I started with, and I liked it.

But if you take taterii's suggestion and start with Battle Network, just skip Battle Network 4. It's terrible.
