Usually, I don’t tend to read or watch anime under the category of “shoujo,” but I actually started to read this one for a bit, if only because the idea of having humans change into animals with just a hug was pretty novel and funny. XD Although Fruits Basket still has more fluff than I usually care for, I’m not against series that are considered “shoujo” since I also watched Sailor Moon when I was younger. To me, stories with fairytale endings like those often feel like they aren’t particularly realistic, but then I’m also partial to Disney’s happily ever after stories, so all’s well that ends well. XD One of my friends lent me the first few books of Fruits Basket when it first came out, but I still have yet to finish it. So far, my favorite characters would probably be Hatsuharu, Saki Hanajima and probably Arisa Uotani as well. I once dressed up as Saki Hanajima for Halloween just for fun (yes, wearing all black and everything). ^^0 I also did my best to stay in character, but that was super difficult because personality-wise, I’m more like another character. lol The other main characters I have read the backstories for so far are as follows:

Yuki – Although it’s interesting that he can still look nice in a dress, I think my favorite scenes for him (up to what I’ve read so far anyways) is whenever he just wakes up and pretty much doesn’t hold back on anything. =P (Poor Kyo.)

Kyo - I keep feeling like I haven’t delved very far into his backstory yet, but he seems like one of the typical delinquent-type main characters. There is pretty much one in every series, and for some reason, they also tend to be the main male character, with orange hair as well!

Tohru - She seems nice so far, and I can see why everyone wants to protect her. I really like the idea she presented that everyone has something special about them, but because their best attributes are hidden on their back, they can’t see it themselves without some help from others.

I have read a bit about the other characters (Momiji, Shigure, etc.) but I don’t feel like I should mention more until I finish the entire story for a more accurate portrayal. (One of my friends decided to spoil the story a little bit for me by mentioning that I haven’t actually read about the main antagonist yet, so I have to hold off on thinking too much about Kyo as well.)

As for watching Fruits Basket with dubs or subs, I almost always prefer the original anime with subtitles (otherwise, I'll watch them with no subtitles or subtitles in other languages). ^^
