I like most gamers was highly excited to hear about the new consoles out now but is new better? I recently spent a few days on my friends playstation four and I gotta say I wasn't impressed, first was the controller sure it's a bit neat with built in speakers and a new button or two to play with but its a bit clunky in my eyes, batteries don't even have a decent life span and the glowing light for me is distracting, the set up when you turn on the machine I find has to much stuff, I don't even know how to delete messages or friends all the added apps I find annoying and I actually had to really search to find the system information to find out how much room he had left on the thing (really wanted to try out plants verses zombies on the playstaion four lol)I much preferred the simple set up the playstation three had, I actually kissed my machine when I got home cause it seemed so much better then the newer playstation four lol, one other thing I'm highly annoyed with is the lack of backwards compatibility I spend thousands on my playstation three only to have sony say you wasted your money now you have to spend more money on this machine completely pissed me off cause I know it won't change when the newer one hits the market probably near the holidays or next year and lastly the fact your forced to be a plus member if you want to use online functions for the games if I wanted to pay for online services I would have bought a x box.... no offense to x box gamers lol. All an all I wasn't happy about the new system and I'm not sure if I ever want to get a new console , What do you guy's think about the new systems and what are your opinions of them?

I must say we have quite different opinions, in fact I'd dare say our views are polar opposites. lol

I only played on a PS3 once and though I loved it, I found the UI to be confusing initially. The PS4's (I own one) interface is a bit messy when they slap all of those apps and games in one big row (they really need to update that), but at least I can see where everything is without scrolling around. Really I think the PS3 compartmentalized things too much while the PS4 didn't compartmentalize them enough. I think we need one section for games, one for system, and one for everything else, possibly allowing users to make folders for neat freaks like me. All in all though, I found the UI to be much easier to navigate, despite having to sift through more things to get what I wanted.

The controller actually feels like a huge improvement on the previous designs to me (which I always felt the Dualshock was the best controller anyway). The shoulder buttons are more comfortable and the speaker adds an immense amount of depth when the developers use it properly (Knack is an example of a game that uses it well) and it can make you feel like you're in the action instead of sitting back and looking at it.

Also the battery life is really quite good I feel. Maybe he didn't have them charged well, or failed to adjust the power save options? Mine will last through an entire day of gaming (and when my nephew is here we actually play for up to twelve hours), and I never have to stop to charge them.

The lack of backwards compatibility makes sense really. As Sony said, they could do it but since they would have to developer the emulation software and make sure they kept it patched and working well with all games, it would take a lot more time than they could justify with the path they're taking. Basically they said they have to choose which way they want to go with their updates and such, and they have chosen to use the time and funds to focus on next gen features instead of backwards compatibility. And I guess in the end it only really hurts the people that skipped the PS3 like I had to. PS3 owners should NOT sell the PS3 because yeah, they'll lose a lot of games, but non PS3 owners can just buy the classic PS3 games for PS4 via digital purchases. I myself plan to buy a PS3 though and just buy used games. lol

And the online thing...I can understand people being upset over. Still I can see Sony's side there as well: those servers and features cost them maintenance continuously, so charging a fee makes sense, though I did hate to see them lose that edge on XBox. Still free online services are like a wound in the wallet that bleeds money constantly. Besides, in theory it'll allow them to offer better services... In theory.

So yeah, to each they're own, man. Still I have a PS4 and I love it to death. Best system ever in my opinion, but maybe it just isn't your thing, you know?

In My opinion new is not better when it comes to video games because now a days newer video games are often shorter and don't have a very thick plot line and in most series just repeat it's self.  even though video games today have very good graphics there are only a handful of games that have there own originality to them. I would say in most cases old is way better then new

My main problem with games from the past few generations is that all the focus is spent on the online/multiplayer aspect of the game and almost none spent on the Campaign or single player part.

Also, games these days do too much hand holding. Like they think all of the players playing the game are 6 year old kids that have never played a video game before. For someone like me, that gets pretty old quickly.

Although I do like modern games, I always seem to revert back to "retro" games. Thankfully, there are a ton of indie developers on Steam that create games modeled after "retro" games. So I get the best of both worlds there.

With regards to the PS4, it's night and day better than the PS3. Especially with regards to the hardware specs. The controller is basically the same as the dual shocks have always been (for the most part) just a little lighter and has a couple more gimmicks.

Seimika : I'd have to say that if there weren't games that I really liked on PS4, I'd pass it up and stick to my PS3.

I mean, why can't there be backwards compatibility? Now, I know that "There are limits when it comes to backwards compatibility" but they could at least try, instead of just chalking it up to another digital re-release profit.

I think that paying for multiplayer is the biggest offender here.Nobody can tell me that keeping servers up is so cost prohibitive that you have to charge a subscription fee.Especially now, when nobody seems to remember when local multiplayer was a thing.
I mean, could you imagine if Vizzed charged a fee for netplay features? So So Sony, Microsoft or anyone else can't tell me that, as big as they are, they can't afford to keep the multiplayer servers up on their own.

Nowadays, most games are practically JUST multiplayer like Evolve. And yes, way too many apps. It's like they try to dazzle you with "Things!Exitement!" but it really hurts the experience more than anything else.

I think these guys really need to get their act together if they want this to work out.Or hey, who knows, a few years in the future people may be willing to pay a daily fee just to keep their games from being deleted.I sincerely hope it won't come even close to that.

I've been told by a friend of mine that Microsoft wants to make a hand held system... I don't know if it's true but I definitely wouldn't be using it if it came out

Spidey243 : Actually Sony themselves have said that backwards compatibility wouldn't be a problem, but they have just decided to use their resources to work on a different path for their new gen system. And while I like backwards compatibility, I don't think it's as big as I once did. I mean we buy new gen for the new gen after all. It would be cool to be able to play PS3 games on my PS4, but I don't really care that I can't. Again though, to each their own.

Jordanv78 : I agree that the indie retro style game movement is a huge plus. I love it personally. Plus seeing 8 bit style games on a PS4 is awesome: it shows that true game lovers know that the gameplay and fun are what matters, not the graphics. I love that a 2D pixelated game can be as popular as a AAA 3D photorealistic game. This is one of the main reasons I love modern gaming: it's open to all and runs in all directions. It's inclusive.

Also I think a Microsoft handheld would be a terrible idea. I just don't think the majority of their fan base would buy it because it doesn't tailor well to the type of experiences people associate with XBox gaming. That's just my two cents though.

Newer is not always better. Like Windows 10 for example. Right now it is going through its bug phase and a lot of stuff does not support Windows 10 at the moment. Old school games will always have a charm in my eyes as well as many gamers.

new things only work if they're needed and necessary. Like motion controls they were touted as the new way to play, but most of the time they were poorly executed. The vast majority of people would rather use a controller or a keyboard and mouse. Also whose idea was it to not include backward compatibility in the PS4? Their alternative, Playstation Now, is just dumb where you pay monthly subscription to play a last gen games via streaming, which makes for a horrible experience. Playstation plus is dumb as well since once your subscription is up you can't play any of the games you bought with playstation plus, and you can't play multiplayer. Another dumb thing is the suggestions in the store where playstation shows you titles you might like because you played a certain game. But these suggested games for the most part have nothing to do with the game you were playing. For example Playstation suggested that I buy Bloodborne or Mortal Kombat X because I played LittleBig Planet 3.

Is new inherently better? Certainly not, but it has the potential to be better. Take Metal Gear Solid 5 as an example, it is able of doing things which, a decade ago, would've been totally gimped, if not impossible to achieve.

As for the current gen consoles, they're alright at the moment. I don't have a problem with the controllers or interface, and the libraries will grow over time. The interface and controllers can be changed later. Remember, the 360 dashboard saw a major overhaul in 2010. Similarly, the PS1 saw three controllers: the original, Playstation Analog, and Dualshock. Then the PS3 saw two official controllers: the SixAxis and Dual Shock 3.

The nice thing about current gen hardware is that there's always the potential for change, whereas past hardware is set in stone. If there is something you don't like then let the company know and they might fix it after a certain number of complaints.

Hmm....to be honest there are some new things that I like, and some that I don't. The only newest console I have played so far is the ps3. And I would rather keep it that way. some games are not really that interesting which are the new ones, while some are ok. That is why as someone said retro games will always have something games of today don't have. They could try and only some would work out while, most fails at times. That's why I stick to what I like, and I really do try to look for something new at times.  :/

Knowing Windows they would be easy for the right person to circumvent. Besides Win 10 will probably be buggy as hell when it drops.

Hello all. Well in my opinion new is not all it is cracked up to be. Don't get me wrong tho in what I am saying. I like the better graphics and the sheer amount they can put into games. To be honest tho ... I prefer the older systems. The games just hold more familiarity to me and a dearer place in my heart, as I was younger and a lot more enamored with them. To many games now-a-days just get too complicated and I'm not crazy about over complicated paddles either. The newest system I own is a PS 3. Like the new but give me the old games anytime and I will be in gaming heaven. Take it easy all and have a great day.  Oh as far as the PS 4 goes ... I am not a fan and will stay with my PS 3 till I think the PS 4 has evolved enough to go ahead and spend the money on it. Probably about the time PS 5 is coming out.

Newer does not equal better. It all depends on the game. I personally find it very sad that many people nowadays disregard older games simply because they're old. There are amazing games from all generations.
