A inexpensive option that works great for all formats/systems/etc modern AS WELL AS retro is the Logitech Model F310. This controller is modeled after a Playstation Dual Shock controller. I've used one for years on vizzed and it works great.

You can usually purchase these for around 15$usd

ibiggmikei : If you have  PS2/PS1 controller, I recommend you get a converter from Big ben, you just insert your PS2 or PS1 controller in to the converter and the converter in the the PC. and there you go
