So today, I went and got my passport. Well, filed for one anyways.

This has been something that I have been wanting to do for awhile. Now that I have done it, I will finally be able to go into Canada for the first time, when I'll meet Snowdeath and hopefully a few other people as well.
I'll also have reason to start saving up for my trip to Japan that I want to make in a few years.

The only thing I wasn't sure about is them taking my birth certificate. Now, I don't have my birth certificate. They said I will get it back when my passport comes in the mail, but my concern is why didn't they just make a copy of it? Why did they have to take the original?

thing1 : For some reason copys dont work. you shouldent worry since it is being mailed to the same goverment that issued it. I think it has to do with the paper or somthing so they know it is real.

Yeah the passport thing is weird, but I've always gotten my stuff back and not had an issue whether I was getting my passport or a Visa.

If for whatever reason something happens, you can always get them to pay for you to get another copy of your birth certificate.

Firstly Congratulations on your first step to receiving a passport.

To answer your question they need the original document so that you can prove who you said you are. It wouldn't take much for someone to send a photocopy of a Birth Certificate claiming to be that person after all. It's basically to prevent identity fraud and the like.

like Jordan stated they should send it back. But if for some bizarre reason they don't you can easily obtain another copy of it. The only downside is that you might be without it for a while and if that is the only source of identification you have that might make the next few weeks awkward.

Anyway hopefully you manage to get your passport first time round and won't have to apply for it again due to making a mistake on the form!

Congratulations! I'm wondering, why didn't you get a passport or an ID card earlier? They're really useful, and it doesn't take that much time to get one.

And second, I hope you have a lot of fun in Canada and Japan if you ever go there. Both are amazing countries from what I heard in stories, so I think you'll have a blast.

I too am surprised you didn't already have a passport considering you were in the military and whatnot. But I guess if you never had a reason to get one, that's understandable.

I've had to travel for work a lot and traveled out of the country even right after I got out of College so I've had mine for awhile. Even if you aren't traveling, Passports is a very useful piece of Identification to have.

Good luck with getting your passport and having your birth certificate returned! A trip to Japan sounds cool, and it'll hopefully be worth the wait. Congrats!

juuldude : Like Jordan said, I never had a reason to get one.
Jordanv78 : Well, Hawai'i is an American state, so I didn't need a Passport. And with being in the military, I don't think you need one. I am actually not 100% sure on that one.

thing1 : I know. I wasn't saying that it was required to have one in the Military I was just saying that a lot of people do because they are useful ID's to have in certain situations even aside from international travel.

Jordanv78 : Oh yeah. I mean, it is something useful to have. I just never got one because I never needed one. But now I have a need for one, so I am getting one.

Congratz on getting your passport. I'd love to hear how Canada is. The reason I say that is because if I were to ever visit another country, Canada would be one of the only places I'd consider visiting.

Good for you! Canada has a lot to offer - and I'm not saying it just because I was born there - and the rest of the world too! I hope you get the necessary funds to travel a lot. "Trips help build up youth", as we say in French.
