I implemented an auto scroll feature in the Retro Game Room and need to know whether I should keep it or not.

What it does is, when you're searching for something, it automatically scrolls the page down to the results. Play around with the RGR to see what I mean, try searching for something and you'll see how it works.

So should I keep this, does it make navigating the RGR quicker and more convenient or should I get rid of it, does it make navigating the RGR inconvenient?

well, so far it hasn't worked for me. I've tried searching a couple different things (that got results) and it didn't move down to the results automatically for me.

Using Firefox 3.x. Not sure why it's not working =/ I'll try it again later

Doesn't work for me either, must be IE only cause I'm also using firefox like geo.

just tried it with IE7 and it didn't work either.

I'm planning to upgrade to IE8 in a bit and I'll test it again with that.

Nothings happening here either, so I don't know what it's supposed to be doing.
Is the page supposed to scroll by itself from the top to the bottom over a certain time frame?

Yeah, the page is suppose to automatically scroll down to where the games are displayed. I'm using the newest version of FF and it works fine for me, maybe give it a few seconds, maybe it delays for you guys.

OH. I see when it works.

It doesn't work when I use the search function itself but when I pick a system.

I like the idea... but I would like it to work with the search function as well... so I could search "mario" and it would scroll down to those results.

Some reason I thought it worked with the actual search engine, I'll have to fix that. It works with everything else, when you sort them, filter them, click a page number, etc.

I do. all searches should be like that. And I think it show the top 3 rows... not just 2. But I might use a larger resolution than some people?

But it's a good. That's how searches should be in my opinion.

For me it shows the top 3 rows, I wanted it to show the categories and everything below it and that's what it does for me, I'm hoping that's what it does for you, it should anyway.

EDIT: I had to change what it showed, for some reason the page would display everything starting from the donations area and than it would bounce down and show everything from the categories downward, so I made it so that it shows everything from the donations and downward so it didn't do that bounce thing it was doing, I'll look into fixing that but for now, it shows everything from donations and down.

You mean how the page went to the search box instead of the top of the page do you?
Don't really care, my screen and resolution are large enough that I get the top row of results at the bottom of the window anyways.
I suppose it might be useful for someone though.

My screen isn't large enough to show the entire page, you must have a massive screen.

yeah, I can easily fit all 5 rows into my screen and then some. I use a high resolution though

But it would be nice to have it show 3 rows of results instead of 2 or something like that. Not a big deal... but there is a lot of extra stuff up top that I don't care about if I'm searching for a specific game.

Yeah like I said, it was giving me problems but I'll look into it again tomorrow.

I can fit 5 rows as well and also some of the page numbers but I can't fit the entire page in 1 screen like DH.

well, he doesn't either...

he gets the top row of results at the bottom of his screen.... not the bottom row of results....

but it's not urgent if you have other more pressing things to do All I want is 3 rows showing up instead of 2

lol, what geeo said, I don't fit the whole page on screen just the top row and with "auto scroll" the top 2 rows.
I just have a 22" screen at 1680x1050

Yeah I misread what DH said, spending all day doing PHP work can be really exhausting for the brain

heh, I have a 21" screen at the same resolution.

and yeah, looking at code will do that to you.

Can't sleep so I just spent the last 2 hours re-doing some of the RGR display.

So instead of hundreds of page numbers, you simply can just press Previous page, next page, last page and first page (helps get rid of clutter).

Now for the exciting part.

When you search for something, it automatically scrolls the page down to show all the categories and everything below (for me I'm able to see 3 rows of games).

It gets even more exciting.

When you click to go to the next page, it scrolls the page down even further and displays just the games and for most people, they should be able to see all the games and the links to go to the next page all in one view. So in other words, you should be able to go from page to page without having to use the arrows or scroll bar!

Took me a while to get this perfect but it was definitely worth it. Scrolling thru the pages is even faster now, it almost feels like AJAX.

so that's why you were up so late last night. I was wondering what you were up to at 1 AM my time (2 AM for you ).

But I do like it. The search now drops you down farther which is nice.

And I really like the new page display at the bottom. Not seeing 500+ links show up makes that page feel like it loads faster.
