If my roommate isn't paying his share, and goes out and buys junk food when I have plenty of stuff to eat up in the apartment, is it wrong of me to want to try to figure out if there is a way for me to get him off the lease and out of the apartment after giving him 3 months to get caught up on his share of the bills that I am paying, and he's barely paid any of it?

thing1 : No that isn't wrong at all. Because when you share a house or a small apartment with someone. The agreement will have to be splitting up the payment half and half which is to balance things out and for both of you to pay fairly, and on time. If the other roommate is not putting any effort into doing that, then it is best to kick them out. Because he or she didn't pay for their half and making things harder on you for no reason. or.....you can have a level talk with him saying *you are not paying the other half of the rent* then say why you are upset on that point.. If he understands then he should wise up and buy less junk food, to keep up with the rent payment. If not then kick the guy out of the house, and find someone else. It is as simple as that.

Loose him. Really, you'd be doing him a favour, because it would teach him some responsibility and that he can't go around smooching off people.

As to HOW to go about doing it, I'm not sure. Give him an ultimatum, "Pay up, OR", but be understanding, and maybe ask him why it is he's having a hard time. Regardless of his reason though, he does have to pay, an you can't keep giving him chances... otherwise he'll smooch off you forever.

The longer you let it wait, the harder it will be.

Light Knight : I just posted this on his Facebook page, after telling him this in person.

" Putting this out there on your page so you can't say that I didn't tell you.
You will pay me everything that you owe by the end of the month, or you will go down to the apartment office, and sign yourself off of the lease. If you do not pay me what you owe me, and refuse to sign the lease, I will be taking you to court.
I am tired of you freeloading and smooching off of me. You need to learn priorities. Rent comes before junk food and stuff for your video games. "

He's irresponsible with his money and refuses to prioritize needs over wants.

thing1 : I believe you are completely in the right. Renting is a huge responsibility and a privilege and if he can't face that responsibility correctly then he should not have the privilege of a place to stay. One word. Respect.

thing1 : You are more than in the right to expect your roommate to pay his share of the rent/bills/etc.

That being said, if he is on the lease with you, he will be responsible for his share of the rent, just as you are responsible for his share. If he leaves early, he will be in breech of his lease (in most states)

I would suggest talking with the apartment management if you truly think he has no intention on paying his share.

Jordanv78 : He just signed to be taken off the lease. As of June 1st, he will no longer be living with me.

Now to find a roommate that can actually pay. I can afford to live in this apartment on my own, but money would tight, so it'd be be more comfortable, financially, to have a roommate.

thing1 :

I have been living with roommates almost my whole life and to get one that is decent and getting rid of the ones that are not is always such a pain in the butt that I could tell stories that would fill an entire thread. But getting rid of this person is a good and a smart move. If somebody keeps on complaining that they don't have money yet you can see them spending money on non-essentials continuously is a good sign that the person is a total scum and a waste of space.

I have had roommates who have for instance said they have no money yet have spend each night in one of the most expensive bars in the neighbourhood just to keep up their social life. There was one who thought he would make a good loot by putting his rent money on a crank deal and ended up almost losing not only the rent money, but his freedom and his kneecaps. There was also the teary eyed guy with a gambling problem who would always give the puppy dog eyes when asked to not make the same mistakes again. And the guy who just couldn't figure out how to run his life and our finances and was too depressed to find out and spend our rent money on his own expenses which were sort of like all of the above.

Having good people to live with is really a blessing and I prefer that to living alone but it is... sometimes such a (mis)adventure. No wonder I move so often.

If I was you and had given him many chances to pay and he still didn't pay I would be kicking him out. I wouldn't care if hes a close friend or not.. I gave him several attempts to pay and he has been mooching off me so it's time to pay up or I have no choice. I mean I have to live to you know. Your best bet is what everyone here is suggesting which is just to kick him out as soon as possible. It could possibly turn into something very bad if you don't handle it as soon as you can. Good Luck Thing!

Bintsy : read my reply to Jordanv78. he's out as of June 1st, and knows that if he doesn't pay what he still owes me, I'll be taking him to court.

I already have 1 person who meets the qualifications that I am looking for in a roommate. They are coming up for dinner tomorrow. Only thing is, she's not single. XD ( totally irrelevant, but still a bummer, because she is cute ) .

I fully expect to find at least 2 or 3 more qualified people in the next week or 2 before I make a decision on who will be moving in.
