Oh there are a lot of hard games from back in the day. Days of Thunder was one that comes to mind not to mention Marble Madness. Thats one thing I like about some of the older games. They tend to be more challenging than some of the games that are out today.

I agree, the games today are much easier than the old ones because of the intense graphics engines that make the game look pretty and tone down the difficulty. Some games that do still have that difficulty are games like uncharted 2, Brutal Legend, Devil May Cry 4. But contra and SMB3 still top] it.

Super Ghouls and Ghosts for the SNES.

In order to truly beat the game you had to go through twice in a row. And it's a bloody hard game. Partially because the gameplay is strange and partially because you die so easily. It's stupidly hard

and SMB3? Really? That game is bloody easy. I find the original mario to be more difficult than SMB3. In 3 you have all the extra suits and flying and what not. And if a level is too tough than you just use a "P-wing" and fly through the whole thing.

I can't really think of anything really hard, so I'll just say any of the halo shooter games (1,2,3,odst, NOT wars) on legendary, unless you have l33t skills like I do at Halo, but yeah, it can get pretty hard on Legendary. Not the hardest game, but if you are going solo on legendary, then it gets pretty tough. EDIT: all of the newer games (N64 and beyond) lack difficulty, well, in the late N64 times, cause B-K got kinda hard at times.

Well, there's a lot of hard games out there, especially on the NES and other early consoles, however, what is more important about those games is that all the enemies, all the traps and so on appear in the same spot, I can breeze through the first three levels of contra with ease because I played them a lot, so I think... I wanna be the guy, the free downloadable game, that one isn't just hard, it's insane.
And maybe one of those bullet-hell shooters.

To be honest, the first time I played MegaMan 3, (my favotire MegaMan game) I found it quite hard.

But the hardest game i've ever played is probably a toss-up between Mushihisensama Futari (Queen Larsa... ) And Ikaruga. (EVERYTHING...)

And yet, I love the hell out of both games.

I know it's not very Retro, but Baroque (Wii), I found it hard, in part due to the overall gameplay system. I think I wasn't hardcore enough to make it any further in the game... And there's so many things you can't possibly know about doing right or wrong without looking them up somewhere... D:

i agree with you on that one. all the new games are far too easy. and if they do have some sort of challenge to them, they just make them easy with the stupid tips they give you. the hardest game ive recently played was probably GoW II for ps2 on god mode. not only were the puzzles a nice challenge, but when playing on the hardest setting the bosses and mobs actually pose as a threat. I just cant wait until GoW III comes out hopefully they dont kill it by making it easy

Seriously, I try and try but it's no use.
I can pass it on easy/normal but on hard it's pretty much impossible. Although I've seen speed-runs on the game, and the person playing makes the game seem so easy it's ridiculous.

I agree that contra is has no mercy on you(aka really HARD), and I am playing The contra adventure, but I don't recommend hacking on games(unless if you died on the first second).
