It’s called Dragon Ball Super. And it’s the first new, original Dragon Ball television anime in nearly two decades.

The last Dragon Ball TV anime, Dragon Ball GT, aired from 1996 to 1997.

Yahoo News (via tipster Pyke) and Famitsu report that Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama will be handling the new anime’s story. The series will take place after Goku defeats Majin Buu, and the world has become a peaceful place again.

In Japanese, the title is Dragon Ball Chou (Super), as “chou” (超) means “super,” “hyper,” “ultra,” or even “very.”

The reason for the “chou” naming, Goku’s voice actor Masako Nozawa, explains is that the word is always used in Dragon Ball commercials, video games, and whatnot. Now it will go in the title of the new animated series that is set to air starting this July in Japan.

First was announced the new Digimon season starring the original eight characters from the first series, and now Dragon Ball comes again. Man, if this is not a summer of nostalgia, I wonder what can be.

Well, seems like the series will take place in a similar time as the last three movies, which means God power for Goku and Vegeta and blue hair that will substitute the traditional golden colour in all anime conventions. I wonder if they will come up with yet another new transformation, although I highly doubt it, unless they go Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan 2 or something like that. We want already an official Super Saiyan 5!

After the fight with Beerus, Goku realized that mastering his normal state and Super Saiyan would raise his level more and sap less strength, so I think he probably won’t become Super Saiyan 2 or 3 any more.

So basically there probably won't be transformation beyond Super Saiyan.

This is anime, every enemy is stronger than before, so the protagonists must in turn become stronger. If Goku and Vegeta don't go higher than Super Saiyan God SS, that means another character must kick in. But then, who can have more power than Goku or Vegeta? The only answer is Gogeta, but I doubt they will use the Fusion Dance for the whole series. All that is left would be for the new enemies to not be stronger than Golden Frieza, although that would feel a little deceiving.

We will have to keep a close eye on the news we receive in the following months.

I really hope that they're careful while making this. They could easily fall into a pattern like Naruto did and become mediocre without it mattering because the fan base is large enough to keep going no matter what.  With the disappointing abomination that was Kai, I'm hoping that they will follow through with something better than GT at the very least.

I was wondering why I couldn't find a thread about this till now otherwise I would've replied sooner.

I am ridiculously excited for this and I'm even happier that we don't have to wait long for it at all. We get it in July 2015!

I'm even more excited that Toriyama is handling it. It says it's taking place after the Majin Buu arc but I hope it means it also takes place after Fukatsu No F (Revival of F).

This is obviously one of the biggest new in anime. One of the most popular Shonen is getting a new series after 18 years.

All we can really hope for is that it's not another GT.
