My favorite old school weapon is the spread gun and lazer from Contra because they are the most powerful weapons if you know how to use them.

I prefer the standard melee weapon or gun that has infinite ammo.
They're generally far too powerful for their own good. I've seen people beat games using this weapon alone (on an easy difficulty level). Kinda silly, but funny at the same time.
