Okay, I am having a really hard time choosing which Sci-Fi/Fantasy movie series I should watch: STAR WARS, or STAR TREK. They sound the same but people tell me they are actually different, taking place in different worlds, story, etcetera. I was hoping that some STAR WARS or STAR TREK experts (anyone really) could tell me which one should I watch? Also, please try to include some reasons why! I I will read every post and reply to your reasoning, thanks! :-)

To me, Star Trek always meant that I couldn't watch T.V. because my father monopolized it. Granted, I liked the theme songs (especially Deep Space Nine) but I couldn't understand the dialogues because they were in English.
While I might one day watch the series, I still prefer Star Wars. It's futuristic, and it doesn't pretend representing the future of humankind. Even after the very deceiving prequels I still prefer that; the expanded universe helped a lot too to maintain the interest, which my father helped me fuel - he also read them.

To me star trek is cheesy. Star wars on the other hand is awesome, entertaining, and fun to watch. MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU.

Sauron422416 : It kind of depends on your personal taste. I'm a huge fan of both franchises and yes, they are definitely NOT the same to a fan.

If you prefer a more fantasy-oriented style of science fiction go with Star Wars. First, the setting for events is "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away." You have an unseen cosmic power, "The Force" that influences events, and the technology is sometimes nonsensical and almost always poorly explained if at all. The plot lines are also loosely based on mythological stories. Without giving away any spoilers. I grew up with Star Wars and Star Wars toys and love them dearly.

Star Trek on the other hand is set a few hundred years in Earth's future and even incorporates some aspects of present-day society in it's stories. The technology is more of the "hard" variety meaning that it usually is based on something theoretically possible. There is no magic in the Star Trek universe. Maybe crazy, far-fetched forms of radiation they might dream up to solve a problem but no magic. Unfortunately, the movies seldom live up to expectations. Most fans would tell you they prefer the television shows and I would be one of them.

Both have good points and bad. I told you I'm a fan of both so I can't recommend any without knowing more of your personal tastes. Hope I helped some.

I am going to have to say Star Wars in this scenario. As good as Star Trek is, Star Wars has a lot bigger hold of my heart than Star Trek does.

I love both franchises, but overall I feel Star Trek has more to offer. I suppose if you crave a ton of action it would be Star Wars. But if you want more story than explosions I'll pick Star Trek. Both are great, and both are represented all over in popular culture. With Star Wars you have six(soon 7) movies and some cartoons, comics, and games.  With Star Trek though, you have 12 films, all with a different plot, all the things Star Wars has, PLUS tons of TV episodes that span from the 60s to the 2000's with Enterprise(a vastly underrated show) being the latest. The plot of Star Wars always centers around pretty much the same thing. The good side of the force vs the dark. I guess though Star Trek appeals to more mature Sci-Fi fans more sometimes because for one thing, with TOS(that's Trekkie for 'the original series') you have to accept the fact that it was the sixties when they came out so the special effects aren't exactly going to blow your mind. Their strength is in the story, the characters, and how they deal with different crises. And each other sometimes. And in Star Trek, never go down to the planet wearing a red uniform!  Or Dr McCoy is likely to say his famous line, 'He's dead Jim.'

STAR WARS!! Although my father is a sci-fi fan, he tended to watch the series in English (my first language is French) so I did not understand the dialogues in The Next Generation. In comparison, Star Wars (and Space Balls) was readily available in French and was aired on a regular basis.

Without a doubt, you should definitely watch Star Wars. I personally have never been a Star Trek fan, while with Star Wars, you get to see epic lightsaber duels and an epic storyline (if you watch the original trilogy you'll get the awesome story.)

If you get the time, definitely check out the original Star Trek movies. The Wrath of Khan is excellent, and the first movie, while incredibly slow, offers some really cool ideas and visuals.
