janus : Not sure, but it looks like the Super Famicom (SNES) released in Japan 1990 and the Megadrive (Genesis) released in Japan in 1988. So they're actually two years apart instead of three. Still a 40%-50% of a generation.

In the end these two systems distinguished themselves from one another in many ways, such as the games they carried. So really there can be no clear cut better console. It mostly depends on what kinds of games you like best. For example, RPG gamers needed an SNES, while Sports gamers needed a Genesis. These days all genres are equal on all consoles, so first party IP and system features ARE what makes the difference, but not so back then.

Eirinn : So there was even a difference for Japan... Interesting. And yet Sega kept popping games for the Master System. They don't know marketing.

And yes they did distinguish themselves with the games they had to offer. I remember a magazine from about 1995 (96?) that ranked consoles according to their strengths and weaknesses. Genesis came on top for sports, one or two spots above the newly released PSX.

But for RPGs... I still hesitate to toss Genesis aside. Phantasy Star II and IV are two of the best RPGs for the era. Granted they were basically the only ones but they technically have nothing to envy to Final Fantasy

Ok, Console Wars 1 (or CWI). My family has manage to own both consoles in the 1990's and we have been more of a Nintendo family rather than a Sega family, and by playing both consoles, that has proved it that the SNES seem a lot better than the Genesis to our point of view.

When I started into video gaming in 2000 (after both consoles been dead for quite sometime), I have still manage to play both consoles and I also think that the SNES had made me more interested than the Genesis and I was young at that time and didn't know they was a war when those 2 were out.
