It doesn't look like it saves, because you are using the emulator to save instead of the in-game save, so you don't see anything. However, when you load the game and hit F4, your game will load right back to where you left off when you hit F2.

In-game, every time you get a star, it should give you the option to save when it kicks you back into the castle, too, if you prefer to use the in-game saving system.
