My mother is seriously "catholic" and I am wondering how I should break it to her that i really don't believe in a god.

I had a similar problem just like you not too long ago, and I was afraid that something bad would happen if I told them I didn't believe. I just went ahead and told them, and they were fine with it. It really depends on what your parents are like. Do they get angry a lot of the time?

LunarDarkness2 : about something like this, YES, my mother would most definitely get mad. My father has already probably figured it out though.

james44028 : If that's the case, just do what you think is best. I waited until I knew I wanted to tell them for a while. Once I told them, I felt a huge burden come off my shoulders. I can't make your decisions, just do what you think is right and at the right time.

Look at my "coming out" thread I created today. It's my personal story for my sexual coming out, but you can use the introduction of each points and related them to YOUR "coming out".

Just a few summarized points; Make sure
you accept it, make sure you have a few allies behind you and, most importantly, make sure your mother is ready too. I don't know if atheism could cause family division like sexuality or politics, but don't rush things yet. One of my husband's friends is over 45 and still hasn't come out to his mother. She must "have some doubts", but she gave not-so-subtle signs that she didn't have much consideration for homosexuality.

Sword legion : I was looking to see i there were people in any kind of similar situations who could give any kind of advice and, obviously, some did. Try to think a little bit before you question someone's actions and contribute absolutely nothing to a thread. This category is meant for questions.

Bringand: Long story, but that would probably make her angrier. ;-;

janus : I will definitely check it out! Thanks for your help!

james44028 :

I know why you made the thread.

You asked a question.

So I answered it.

Even if you didn't like the answer.

I would feel really bad for any mom who had a kid who went to the internet for advice over very personal stuff over those close to him in real life.

Wouldn't you?

Sword legion : You were obviously aware that that was not I intended for when i made the thread, and i hate to say this but i'm not very close to my mom. Neither are any of my brothers or sisters. And you didn't "Answer" anything. you asked a question. You know absolutely nothing about me and yet you judged me. Didn't your mother ever teach you not to judge a book by its cover? You have to read what is inside to uncover the plot ;3. I would rather not have this turn into a flame war, so lets just stop now. I got what i was looking for from the people who actually Helped.

Sword legion : The relative anonymity of the Internet allows for people who would otherwise remain silent to speak out freely. Had it have today's expansion when I was in high school, I would probably have come out of the closet much earlier. The mid-90s were a dark period for me mostly because of this questioning I had and because of the (almost) non existing resources for me.

I get your point about a parent's... uneasiness of his child asking such personal questions. Unfortunately, maybe it's james44028's only source of expressing himself with something he's not comfortable with. Plus I doubt the mother would browse on Vizzed; to make "surer" there are always school computers/wireless connections.

james44028 : I understand where you're coming from, me. I have the same problem with my grandparents (my parents doesn't care about religion), they are one of those religious nuts. But how hard it is, I have let them know that both me and my brother doesn't want to go to church for a reason (mostly current event reasons with religion & war, plus other situations going on). So, both me and my brother doesn't really want anything to do with religions for mostly this reason I mentioned.

With you being 13, it can be a little hard to explain to your parents about wanting to not believe in God, I have went through the same way.

james44028 :

Actually, when you start a topic, people can post about it, so long they remain on topic, and that I have. The thing is, I wish to back it up a bit and bring about a point.

Actually, you can tell a lot about a book by it's cover, not always, but many times you can.

Discussing an action is not a flame war either. (I am not sure why you would suggest that.)

Also, people telling you not what you want to hear is just another part of life. (Unless you're on the internet, then you can just block people you disagree with.)

44028

I'm just going to suggest you rethink things a little bit more, but I will tell you this- the internet does not house the best of the human populace. There's a reason I don't go around making threads like this.

As for you janus, you only know as much as you know about this person too. I sure hope to God, that people aren't putting their faith in those across a covering screen over the people they have in real life unless in very sincere circumstances. (I doubt this is the case here as well).

Sword legion : I get your point: you disapprove of james44028's method. And I agree too that the Internet, despite its wealth of information, sometimes has dangerous, if not downright mortal, information.

But at my age, I believe I'm intelligent enough to separate the good from the bad since I often counter-verify the information - I can look in more than one language which helps.

Nevertheless, questions like his are pretty common around I'm sure (questioning oneself is part of growing up. And for such a contentious as religion it is wise to ask for advice since others have lived it too. Maybe 13 is a little precocious, but some are just mature more quickly.

IgorBird Grandparents are quite unpredictable. In my experience, they are either very opened or very closed-minded. My mom's parents died before my coming out, but I'm sure they would have accepted me after some thinking... and my grandma's prayers for my soul. My other grandparents accepted me; they even came to my wedding although my grandfather still has a hard time calling my union "marriage" or the man I married my "husband" but he still accepts him as family.

But when it comes to religion, it might be harder considering (at least for people who grew up in rural areas like my grandparents) for them to accept this world view so prudence is essential.
