I'd recommend Counter Strike Global Offensive. If you like it you'll spend hundreds of hours playing it.
I also recommend One Finger Death Punch and Valkyria Chronicles if FPS isn't your thing.

Gamewiz : First suggestion on this thread with taste, well partially, Electronic Super Joy is by far the only "super hard" platformer worth playing.
The best experiences on steam are mostly single player games, I'd recommend the following;

Knights of the Old Republic: Oldie but one of the best rpgs ever made and quite possibly BioWares strongest title to date. You can pick it up for around £7 or regional equivalent or extremely cheap come steam sale.

Deus Ex Franchise: Generally you can pick any of them and if it's your style of game, enjoy it. People say the second installment Invisible War is bad, but in reality it isn't that terrible just not as good as the original or Human Revolution. Do not touch Deus Ex: The Fall with a 20 foot pole, its just not worth it.

Rift™: yes it's free to play, yes it's a mmorpg, but if I know anything with over 8 years of playing mmos, its the best one out there right now in my personal opinion. Combat is better than WoW and Runescape, Story is okay if you can follow it, Graphics are fantastic with a decent machine.

Besides those notable mentions include:
Team Fortress 2, Divinity Original Sin, Styx, On the Rainslick Precipice of Darkness episode 1 and 2, Awesomenauts, Knights of the old Republic 2 The Sith Lords (with restored content mod), Alice Madness Returns, Half-Life Franchise.

Things to avoid:
Stanley Parable (Overated walking simulator,) FNAF 1 and 3 (2 isn't too bad but the others are subpar to other games in genre),
GTA games that require you to fly helicopters.

I would suggest Race The Sun, The Escapists, and Unturned. Those 3 are all amazing games.

You like Zelda? Block puzzles? Gr8 humor m8, no h8 I still r8 8/8. Check out Ittle Dew. Spent 12 hours until I beat it, but that was just bare minimum requirements. About 10$ so not expensive.

Except Unturned, I really don't like that update, but that's just me. 

iN008 : I love the FNAF franchise, and I already got all 3 of the games. I'm a huge fan. But, I understand that there are those do not enjoy it.

LunarDarkness2 : I don't actually think they have anything wrong with them story-wise, they do provoke thought and speculation, its just as games they dont bring anything new or progressive to the horror genre, jumpscares are the lowest form of horror and personally I feel horror will never be at a higher peak than Silent Hill 2 (heres hoping Silent Hills will he good). Atmosphere is everything, jumpscare based horror is like Adam Sandler to comedy. If you want a true horror classic I'd recommend System Shock 2.

LunarDarkness2 : i could recommend: half life, half life poopsing force, etc. half life 2, payday: the heist, payday 2, serious sam classic, the first encounter, most of the serious sam games are good. try sonic adventure dx, star wars: jedi academy , star wars jedi outcast, star wars dark forces, star wars dark forces 2, there is a lot of good steam games out there.

TF2 is super fun and free to play, but its very hard to get good, I got 1100 hours and im still pretty awful. Civ V is a very fun and fairly simple strategy game, while EUIV/CKII/VICII are extremely complicated but still fun.
Terraria, Starbound (early access), Epic Battle Fantasy 4 and Expeditions: Conquistadors are fun and unique games too.

These are some of my recommendations.

I have another one... Borderlands 2. If you like FPS games or RPG's it's definitely worth checking out! Also, Age of Empires II, or III. They are both good games with a lot of variation!

Counter strike:  GO / Team fortress 2 if you like fps and can make some money with items xD

dota 2 in moba style

saints row: The third / Sleeping dogs or GTA V when is launched for ''freestyle'' game

fallout 3 / new vegas are recommended

dragon age origins (the first 1 xD), skyrim, dark souls 2, darksiders 1+2 are good too.

if you want to stole some banks... payday 2 its your game , very good game if you play with friends xd

xcom for turn based game.

and much more games... but with this you have more than 300-500 hours xD

Batman, the witcher, shadowrun, final fantasy (7 is my best xD), burnout paradise, lost planet, alan wake....

There is a ton of mods for the game with whole new qeusts lines gear and followers, al downloadable from steam.. so when you beat the game there is stil a lot of cool things to explore.
I myself played this game for over 300 hours in this fashion, just give it a go.. you wil not be disapointed
