Most PS3s can't play PS2 games.
A small amount of the first PS3s could play PS2 games.

The NTSC 20 GB CECHBxx and 60 GB CECHAxx models had hardware based PS2 emulation.
The PAL 60 GB CECHCxx and the NTSC 80 GB CECHExx models had software based PS2 emulation.

Hardware emulation is simply that the console has PS2 hardware in it, which means it can play all the games from the start.
Software emulation is the same as running an emulator on the PC. It is not 100% compatible with all PS2 games.

Also, all PS3 models have PlayStation One backward compatibility through software emulation (so again it won't play 100% of PS games).

It would obviously be one of the models I listed above, no matter what size hard drive it currently has, the only ones that can play PS2 games are listed in my last post.
Unless someone modified their PS3 that is (though I'm not sure if that can be done, PS3s have really good piracy protection).

All PS3s that have the "Emotion" engine are capable of playing many, but not all, PS2 games. This includes the 20gb, 60gb, and some 80gb PS3s.

Hardware emulation (the PS2 chip) is obviously much better than software emulation (the only thing you'll get with an 80gb system).

I say just GET a Ps2. Get one of the non-slim ones. Get the network adapter. Get a 300gb hard drive. Then get HDLoader, and back up all your games onto the hard drive so you never have to put the discs in.
It's SO worth it.

I just think that's weird that PS3's can play PS1 games, but not PS2 games. Why not meet in the middle? Reminds me of the Atari 7800's backwards compatability with the 2600 games, but not the 5200 ones.

Software emulation of PS1 is easier then software emulation of PS2.
Simple as that. I'd prefer all PS3s had full hardware emulation though.
