The first Final Fantasy game that I played was Final Fantasy VII, because it was one of the few Playstation games my grandma had. I've heard that Final Fantasy VI is a great Final Fantasy game, I'd recommend it.

Well, you may not know if you haven't played Final Fantasy games before, but my profile name is that of the main villain in Final Fantasy VI.  This is a super Nintendo release from 1994.  It's my favorite of the series.  Awesome music, storyline and characters (most playable characters of any of the games...14!)  I also really loved Final Fantasy VII, which was a Sony PlayStation release.  These two would be perfect for someone looking for an introduction to the series.  The other games have their charm too, but these really grab the players and bring them in to a new world.  Its really an awesome franchise if you have the time and patience to play a long game with side quests and leveling characters up.  There is plenty to do, lots of elusive items, spells, skills, games and prizes, etc.  I would think that if you give either of these a chance, you'll be hooked.  Do them chronologically: Final Fantasy VI and THEN Final Fantasy VII!  Also, if you want to play Final Fantasy VII, you'll need the Play Station item from the site store, which is 50,000 Viz.  If you don't have that, I would definitely suggest starting with FF6.  I was just able to buy the PS1 item today-so I'll finally be able to revisit FF7! Yay!

Wow someone who has little experience in final fantasy series can choose any one of the games for an epic adventure that being said. This question really depends on you as a gamer and what you like. I personally would suggest that you start on the N.E.S. With the first one and go all the way threw the entire series which may I add Vizzed is one of the only places this is possible. All the translated versions are here and there is a reason why the series has so many sequels.
The choice is yours so if you are not into N.E.S. Then the S.N.E.S. has parts 2 and 3 part 3 is actually part 6 I think but its where most people started liking the series. Final Fantasy 7 is on PlayStation and is where the really cool looking spells start. I could go on forever but any of these games in this series is a fine starter point for you.

The first one is a good start, since... well, it's the first Final Fantasy. IV is another good one, being the first on Super Nintendo, and it still retains a lot of classic elements that you can see getting used elsewhere in the series. VI, while one of the best, may not be the best starting point, since that's closer to when the series starts getting less 'fantasy', but if you wish, it's still a great game.

There are a ton of brilliant Final Fantasy games. Since you're having a hard time deciding, I'll make a list of games in the series that you should consider trying out.

You can't go wrong with Final Fantasy 7, 9, 6, 4, 10, or 3. All of those games have fantastic storylines, very memorable soundtracks, and great gameplay. There's one game in particular that I think you should definitely avoid though, and that's Final Fantasy 2 for the nes, (it's also available on GBA and PS1 in Dawn of Souls). That game has a terrible battle system. As long as you stay clear of that game, you'll enjoy Final Fantasy.

If you've never played a turn-based RPG...I recommend starting with Final Fantasy IX. It will give you a good introduction and get you started without too much frustration.

If you
have played turn-based RPGs before and enjoyed them...I really recommend starting with Final Fantasy I. Whether you use the original version or manage to find the "Dawn of Souls" version for GBA, doesn't matter, they're essentially the same when it all boils down. The storyline is more simple, but it's a good intro to the series as you work your  way up to the more complex games.  I also HIGHLY recommend that you play Final Fantasy X and X-2. They get bashed a lot, but they're wonderful games with a beautiful art style and a compelling story...and the skill-allocation system is kind of unique.

Hope you find one you like!

If you're talking strictly about "originals" (i.e. the very first version of the game), then Final Fantasy IV (available on PSX) is the best tutorial you can get. Very early in the game you are taught your Final Fantasy 101 class, which I believe was the first time it happened - the NES Final Fantasy III had people helping you in the first village but they were dispersed all over).

But if you want to learn the real basics, Final Fantasy I Origins is the best teacher you can get. Despite improved graphics and music, it's a copy/paste version of the 1986 game so it doesn't have much depth. Combined with the 101 class added on the PSX version, this will make you complete the game in no time.

Its been a long time since I played Final Fantasy. I wasn't into it for very long, but it did keep my attention for a period of time. After some of the games started seeming exactly the same, I just kind of lost interest.

But the very first game I started with was Final Fantasy for the NES. I thought that game taught me a lot for it being my first time ever playing a FF game. It was very basic, nothing too complicated ( like most, if not ALL NES games ). Its the usual go to one area, kill some enemies, level up your guys, buy some new weapons, then the process repeats from there.

So I recommend you start with that one, then go from there.

I actually have two games to suggest if you take the time to read this. The first game I suggest is Final Fantasy I&II Dawn of Souls for the Gameboy Advance because it has the first two Final Fantasy games in one as well as having extra content since it is a remake. I next recommend Final Fantasy IV Advance for th Gameboy Advance because this game was one of the greatest RPGs I have ever played had a great story and also having extra content because it is a remake as well but that is just my opinion. So I recommend these and if you choose to play them have fun :3

Definitely start with either one of the first three games, or Final Fantasy VII, as I think those games aged the worst. They're still amazing, but once you start with any of those, it'll only get better from there.

Just be sure to skip and XIII and Lightning Returns. Those two are dumb. ^^'

SuperLuigi802 :

EDIT:  you asked this in February?  No way you are still a noob!  why am I answering this??

I tried to read all the many other posts and opinions, but there was a lot!

Lots of people focused on you being a "newbie" and thought that the challenge to getting into a Final Fantasy game is technical.  I think the biggest challenge is starting with a game that you will care about before you get bored and give up on.

Final Fantasy 1 is a classic, but by modern standards, it is lacking some things you might expect a game to do to grab and hold your attention, and make you care.  It doesn't even have main characters really.  None of the people have a personality!

Final Fantasy IV (Final Fantasy 2 in the USA) gets my vote because it has a great balance in the opening moments of story and sending you right on a quest that will blow your mind in very short order.  In less than 1 hour you will know whether the Final Fantasy series is like one of the best things ever or if it might not be for you.

By comparison, Final Fantasy 7 has snazzier graphics and everything, and it's pretty amazing...  Actually now I am a little on the fence.  If you think you would prefer a psx era game, go with ff7, if you'd prefer a more retro feel, I vote 4, because both of those games have a very good opening-game, you will know very shortly whether it is so amazing that you won't want to stop playing for hours on end, and by the time you do that you won't be a beginner anymore, the technical challenges of not dying will sort of take care of themselves if you take the time to persuse powerup items when dudes offer to sell them to you, and pay attention to basic math observations such as "at this rate, I may die if I don't cure myself, etc".

Ooh speaking of patience, sorry I was a little long-winded in making a pretty simple and unsophisticated point.  My bad.  Hope this helps!

It's not actually a Final Fantasy title, but usually beginners start with a simplistic RPG. And since Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest is very  simple, I recommend starting with that one. Even if it's not actually a Final Fantasy game, except in the obligatory title(at least I don't believe it is), you can get through that one easy. The chests reset, so you can be thrifty when the townspeople sell you simple things like cures or explosives, all you have to do is go back to the place where you got those things and voila, you have avoided spending money you didn't actually need to spend.

I absolutely agree with those who said IV. Great music, characters and bosses.

It's also not to long a game comparatively, even for a first timer.

Strating with the SNES in general is good because its not to big of a jump in either direction afterwards.

I'll have to agree with zanderlex and say FFX. It's got a very good storyline. If you don't mind tides constantly denying the fact that he's not going back home even when everything else around him suggest otherwise for the majority of the game.
