Well, after so many months, I am back in school, I officially back in as of today after about 9 months. I went today and did some sort of pre registration thing and I was already accepted a few weeks ago, but its official today. They gave me some sort of a transcript for all of the credits that I did and 18 of the 30 credits that I got before have rolled over to this school as well as 1 credit that I got when I was in high school.

Next week I am going to take a Placement Exam for Reading, Writing, and Math to figure if I need to take non credit classes before I can take credited classes. After I take the test I get to make an appointment for when to actually register for classes.

I only plan on taking 4 classes this semester for a couple of reasons. Since the semester is about a month shorter than most schools, that lost month is condensed into the semester, so a 3 credit class that's usually 3 hours a week will be 4 hours a week. Just taking 4 classes would require 4 consecutive hours a day, 4 days a week. I would really prefer not to add a whole other 4 hours a week, which would probably result in 5 straight hours a day or 6 to 7 hours with breaks. Then of course there's the time it would take to get there and back. This is actually one of the furthest schools from my house and requires a bus, two express trains, and then another bus, which should normally take anywhere from two and a half hours to three hours. So just 4 classes all back to back combined with transportation would take 9 to 10 hours out of my day 4 days a week, so I wouldn't be able to add another class, even though I do want to.

I don't really know what I want to take, I picked something along the lines of physical Health and Recreation as my major only because of the Sports Management concentration, but I don't even know if I would get my scholarship level gpa back to go to the last school before I'm even eligible to take sports management classes. I'm going to take a math class hopefully, I haven't had math in 2 and a half years now, and science which was missing from my life for the same amount of time, but I don't know what my last two classes would be. Both of those classes would most likely transfer back when I go back to my old school, so I don't have to worry about that much.

It is good that you didnt make the mistake of taking more classes than you can handle; I know I did. Transportation will be a bit frustrating, but it will allow you to read over the chapters you are studying, which really is something you will learn to appreciate. It is good that a number of the classes you took previously have transferred over, as it saves you money and time. Know that these maths and sciences you will be learning will be quite a step up from high school, so you will need to spend considerable time wrapping your head around them until you are comfortable again.

The best advice I can give you is to find a healthy balance between work and entertainment. Do not involve yourself in an outside of school activity that will eat up your school time (homework, sleep schedule, studying), as it could be something that you may regret later. Do not stress too much, but dont lose focus of what is most important. Schedule yourself if you need to, and remember to put first things first.

Good luck, and try to enjoy it.

bobq : Meh, more likely than not, I'll be on my phone posting at the points when the train is above ground, so I'd only get maybe an hour or so each way.

dont underestimate it man. An hour of reading over a chapter each day will really add up... it can be the difference between understanding the chapters and being confused.

I had many classes where the textbook was a waste of money so I stopped buying textbooks unless its a class that heavily relies on the book in nearly every class.

bobq : I usually tend to hate textbooks, I wasted so much money last year and 2 of the books are still in their original wrapping and they wont even take it back. Thats how little I used my books. Probably might be easier in my case to try top get digital textbooks on my phone.

That's great news dude. I hope for the best!

If you throw yourself into your schoolwork like you've thrown yourself into Vizzed these past few weeks, I'm sure you'll do well no matter where they place you.

Today was a pretty good day for school because I had to take the CUNY Placement Exam to see what kind of classes I would be in and I think I might have failed one if them. The first test was an hour and a half of writing and I managed to pull together a few good paragraphs, so I think that I should have been able to pass that part of the test easily and maybe get stuck in writing one or something. The next test was reading and there was like 5 passages with 5 to 8 questions each and I'm pretty sure that in each passage, I got at least 1 or 2 questions wrong, and I'm 50/50 on what I scored here.

The math test started out easy, and I was surprised about that since I hadn't taken math in more than two years. Some of the questions just needed to be calculated on a sheet of paper and some I could answer just by looking at the computer screen. It was easy, maybe got 18 of the first 20 right.

But then everything went bad, I got to the part about cos, sin, and tan, and I completely failed at this since i didn't remember any if it, literally none of it. I think I must have put a random guess for these questions maybe 15 to 20 times, but hopefully the first half and the 2nd half will balance each other out and I don't have to take an expensive no credit math class. (I don't even remember math cos, sin, and tan were from, like trig, or pre calc, or whatever)

They said the grades for reading and math should be up in a few days so I'm a bit nervous and the writing grades will be up in about a week. I have an appointment to pick my classes on February 20th which will all be based on my scores, so I'm a bit nervous about what I will take. But guess what? That's not even the worst part, I was told that I HAVE to take another language! I already took 3 languages, but I chose Italian as the one I will study here.

zanderlex : If it's the most basic form, it's trigonometry, but if the question is asking about derivatives or integrals, or asking you to identify the value of it on a unit circle, you would breach into pre-cal/calc territory, which I don't think the CUNY Placement Exam would have since Calc is not considered an "everyone can do it and should know it" math.

Hope all is well with you.

play4fun : It wasn't any of that advanced stuff, but that kind if sucks for me because trig was literally my worst math class. I took trig first in sophomore year and failed the 2nd semester, so I had to take one dull semester as a junior. I passed, but I failed the regents 3 times by then so I had to take trig for another quarter as a senior. Meanwhile, I took pre calc at the same time as a junior and did amazingly, even offered advanced statistics as a senior because of it. So since that's trig, and was the most advanced part of the test, I think that's really going to hurt.

Relax man, I had to take a very similar test and I actually screwed up on one of the math parts to, but still managed to to get into the full credit math course right away. The part of your test in question was trig, as they would not throw something terribly advanced into an assessment test. Even if you go in to pre english and math, it really isnt that big of a deal. Of all my college friends, I was the only one who got into both advanced math and english straight out of the assessment tests, so it is extremely common for people to go into the pre classes, so not to worry.

Picking your courses huh. My advice is, be sure to have some time during your day to eat because its very hard to concentrate when you are hungry. I also am seriously not a morning person, so 8am classes were a nightmare for me. I set a rule for myself that the earliest time I would start a class was 9:50am so that I had some time to wake up and get settled into my school day. When you are half asleep, it is quite difficult to retain information.

Final advice: get to know the people in your class as of the first day because there is a good chance they will also be in some of your other classes. Good luck man, and stay focused. Remember that this is your future so you should take it seriously.

You mentioned an appointment to pick your classes coming up. You should ask them about that. If you end up in advanced math, and you feel it might throw you into an unprepared environment then you should mention that you feel you would be much better prepared for the advanced class if you too the pre class first. All this is assuming you get into the advanced class in the first place. You could always ask them if trig would be a large part of the class. Dont be afraid to ask questions. Also, you could always get a tutor to help you with trig.

bobq : Well, it's differnt. I'm worried that because I did bad on the trig portion, they might put me into a lower class, without even taking any of my advanced classes into considertaion. I got a 95 in Pre Calc and a 91 in AP Stats. I'm good at the advanced classes but they may end up putting me like 4 classes back because of this.
