Hey all. Not sure if this is in the right spot to post but if it is not then sorry mods. I often find myself frustrated many times because I find not many people I know are into the old school pen and paper rpgs like : Dungeons & Dragons, Rifts, Shadowrun, etc...
So finding a group to game with has become a big issue for me over the years. I have tried some online sites and most of those either fizzle out or just die in the middle of the game altogether. So here's my questions :
1. What game sites would you recommend for someone looking to get into a good gaming group ?
2. What do you consider to be your top 3 pen and paper ( tabletop or whatever you like to call it ) rpgs of all time ?
3. Can you tell us a funny story from one of your games or maybe a bit about a character you made that you are proud of ?

Brain-Splattered :

Can't say much other than I've done a lot of RPing in my time, even trying to get my own original one up and going here on Vizzed soon. I have a bit of a fan following so if you want to check it out, you would probably be connected to other players consistently as well.

My original Star Fox RP kept going even after I wanted it to die. I actually had to step in and kill because of real life. Since then I've been thinking about the system that I used and I've been refining it, hoping to make a big debut here shortly. Once I ask Davidio to change the forum name. (That would be the Zelda, Star Fox, Bomberman Forum).

I'm sorry I can't offer much advice as far as other websites go. I have heard of Roll 20 though, you might want to look into that.

My Rpgs tended to distance themselves from traditional RP though. Trying to make something of a hybrid between those, and modern games.

If you want to talk to someone more knowledgeable in that are, I'll summon this guy.

GateKeeper_A :

One other who I think may like this would be

orionfoxgibson :

And possibly:

thephantombrain :

Have fun with these guys, they know a lot more than me.

As for funny stories, I can't think of any at the moment, I may come back if I do though. I've

ooooohhhh, I just remembered one.

It was were two of my RP players to the Star Fox RPg were eating at a cafe on Fincha. Another RP Player was dressed up as a girl and serving food for them. He. . . . made a few awkward statements too that I have this fear were terrible references to Earthbound. Something about a party in the basement. . .

Dark knight of the blackened sun. I am Sword Legion, one of many. My mask is thick, and my armor is strong. All the more necessary in a world such as this. . .

I've done a lot of RP online over the years, but I haven't been terribly active with online RP for a while now.

That said, this: http://www.myth-weavers.com/ might be a good place to start.  Its a fairly active RP site.  (I've never used the site for RP, but I've used the site to host character sheets for games on other sites before.  The site HAS been recommended highly to me on several occasions though.)  They host a wide range of games there (Mostly Pathfinder/D&D, but a little bit of almost everything else as well.), and it has a very active community, so it would probably be a good place to start.  Sorry I cant be of more help than that.

Top three pen & paper games?
1. Star Wars (WEG D6)
2. World of Darkness (The original one, not the new stuff)
3. Pathfinder (Like D&D, only the classes are actually balanced)

Thanks Sword Legion. I look forward to seeing what they have to say then. As for the site you recommended I'll check it out. As for your game Rp , I'll be happy to check it out. Got some games of my own I started and worked on till life got busy and they got stored.

Hey GateKeeper_A. Thanks for the heads up about the website I will check it out. Very nice top 3 you have there.

I figured I would come in and answer part of my questions.  ( which is #2  ).
My top 3 pen & paper games
I've played Dungeons & Dragons, Shadowrun, and Mechwarrior.
As far as funny stories, if you had met my first and fourth group, then you'd know that there is plenty of funny stories. One day soon I will post some of those and share a good laugh. :O)

Glad you liked my favorites.  I'm a pretty active gamer, and I've played a lot of systems over the years, but those three have really become my staples.

Funny stories?  If you enjoy roleplaying stories, take a moment to check out this little gem (Some stories are better than others, my favorite is "Natural Born Gamers"): http://www.tabletitans.com/tales

I was actually planning to post a story or two of my own when I made my last post, but I was a little crimped on time, so I opted not to.  I'll try to remedy that now:

I'll tell about our game from Tuesday.  Me and one of my regular gamers got together on Tuesday in the hopes of getting a few hours of gaming in.  Since it was just the two of us, we opted for Battletech (We often play miniatures games when there are only two or three of us able to get together)

NOTE, probably only funny if you play Battletech.

We opted for mirrored mechs (Same on both sides, 2/3 pilots.) as a quick and easy way to balance the sides instead of each of us building a lance from scratch.  The lance was as follows:

Shade Maker (A 100 ton custom mech.  A missile platform capable of putting 75 missiles in the air at once and enough armor to make an Atlas sweat.)
Zeus
Marauder
Roadrunner (A 20 ton custom mech.  Capable of 15 speed with only a machine gun for weaponry.  They make great spotters for missile platforms as they can get close easily, and can move far enough to make them very hard to hit.  Including both armor and internal, it could suffer only 30 points of damage before being completely destroyed, no matter where you hit it.)

At this point, both of us set up our mechs, both trying to out maneuver each other.

I won initiative, and my opponent's Shade Maker ended exactly 15 spaces in front of my Roadrunner.  I decided to do something daring right from the start.  I decided to charge the Shade Maker with my Roadrunner in the hopes of doing +30 points of damage to my opponent's heaviest mech on the table (Besides, while useful for spotting, Roadrunners rarely do much, if any, damage during our games, even when playing with lighter mechs.)

Since my other mechs had moved to flank and were in places they couldn't be hit, my opponent opted to fire on my Roadrunner with everything he had.  With the firing solutions he had, everything was a 10-12 to hit.  Needless to say, I didn't figure it was likely that I would be hit more than once, maybe twice.

He started rolling dice, managing to hit me with all but two of his weapons through the entire barrage.  When it was all said and done, he had don't over 130 points of damage to my poor little Roadrunner in that single round, utterly destroying the poor little thing.

For the rest of the game, we joked about the mech's pilot, who we referred to as "Splat."

My misfortunes did not end there however.

Two rounds later, I had got my Marauder into the rear flank of both my opponent's Zeus and his Marauder.  Seeing a chance to carve them up from behind, and soaking up the worst of what he can throw at me with my front armor, I got ready to unload everything I had on the rear of his Zeus.  At the same time, he directed his Shade Maker and Zeus's attacks on my Marauder, his own Marauder opting to take a couple of shots at my Zeus.

Shots were fired, and the first shot from my opponent landed a center torso crit on my Marauder, sure enough, he rolled a full 12 for crit locations.  In his first shot, he gutted my engine, killing my Marauder, with me only making minor hits in return.

Meanwhile, a lucky shot at my Zeus resulted in a head shot, gutting my sensors.  To top that off, I failed my consciousness roll and crashed hard.  By the time I regained my feet, his entire lance had homed in on my Zeus and were pounding it mercilessly.

Needless to say, the rest of the game was a rout.  My Zeus regained its feet, coming out swinging (And missing, a lot), but ultimately went down three rounds later.

My Shade Maker took a pounding for a long time, backing itself into a corner to protect its rear, but four enemy mechs, with a combined firepower of about twice of mine, and at least two and a half times the tonnage, there was little doubt as to the outcome at that point.

When my Shade Maker finally went down, I'd barely done enough damage to the entire enemy lance to scratch the paint.  The game was a ton of fun, even if my dice rolls were somewhere between frustrating and hilarious.

When it was all done, I informed my opponent that I'd avenge myself the next time we played, then grabbed us both another Dew before we both sat around for about an hour joking and reminiscing about the game we had just played.

Glad you liked my favorites.  I'm a pretty active gamer, and I've played a lot of systems over the years, but those three have really become my staples.

Hello Internet.

Funny R.P.G. Story?
Table Top Star Wars.

My Team Vs. Teddiz (The Antagonists From "Conkers Bad Fur Day".) that Have The Comic Book Character "Bane's" Venom Steroid system.
The Bears Push a button and they grow into massive size. (Pure Comedy.)

I played an outlaw once.
In That game I had to constantly change my Name and Looks.
That was not easy. But it did explore the criminal side of Star Wars.

There was this one planet inhabited with canibals.
I never thought I'd see anything as comical as that game. .....Till "Pirates Of the Caribbean" came out.

Good Times.
Thank You.
Good Luck To All.
Peace.

When I say what is the best RPG ever, I always picture franchises and side-franchises like; 'Pokémon', 'Mother' (or Earthbound if you don't know squat about Mother), 'Paper Mario', and 'Final Fantasy', battling for supremacy of the enjoyment of my needs. But if I really needed to see that battle happen, I'd put Jigglypuff, Ness, Mario, and a Cloud Strife Mii in a 'Super Smash Bros.' battle. Also, Final Destination only, no items, and SCREW FOX MCCLOUD!

@ Superfanmario908 : Sounds interesting but I was speaking pen and paper rpgs. Not franchise video games. I guess thanks for answering tho.

@ Orionfoxgibson : Yeah I can remember many funny stories I've heard from friends that gamed Star Wars. Funniest one I can remember was a one where this dude named David I gamed with was a bounty hunter and he traveled with a smart-aleck Duros that piloted his ship and caused him many issues of troubles at bars. The other one he traveled with was a droid who was his little thief but had a tendency to go out of control due to a mess up in his programming. The episodes could be violent, funny or just happen at really bad times. They never lasted more than a couple of minutes at most but it was enough to get him into a lot of situations that half the time made really good re-telling stories.

@ GateKeeper_A : I hear ya' about role playing stories and yeah I'll check it out. I always like a good story. Also yes I have played Battletech many times so the story you told me about it was very funny. It also reminded me of the first mech I ever built myself to game with. It was a modified Rifleman and I was so proud of it and ready to " rain down destruction on anyone and everyone with it ". To make a long story short I did enough damage to take out one of a 6 man free for all that took place in a tournament that was being held in our game. My rifleman was so badly damaged that nothing of any real scrap value was left. Needless to say I was cursed like you were with them making miracle rolls and me not being able to hit the broad side of a barn in any of my shots I tried. It was frustrating and fun at the same time.

I thought I would hop on and share a funny story of my own. I'll try to keep it short and not totally drag it out in the telling. To get this one you have to know the background of the game up to a certain part of my story. Now keep in mind I must explain this was like our fifth game as a regular gaming group and our first one in D&D together ( so all our characters were a bit on the low side ) because till then we had been playing mostly Shadowrun. We were playing Dungeons & Dragons with a group comprised of : ( All characters ranged from level nine down to level 6 ) A bard, a cleric, a paladin, a magic-user, a thief, a ranger, and a monk. We were going into this adventure as a group of mercenary types that were working a local area as hire for anything needed ( caravan guards, rescues, seek and destroy monster nest, etc... ). Anyways we were summoned to the local tavern for a job we thought was going to land us a lot of coin and maybe some upgraded items and equipment. We were all excited about it and decided to spend what extra money we had to make sure we were set up for whatever kind of job it may be. So there we were, broke as a joke, and we get this gaudy, way over-dressed, merchant comes in and sits down at the table with us. He tells us about an issue he had recently been having with his caravan route and some local thieving bandits that were taking his hard earned money and product. So the paladin of our group, also the group leader, goes into negotiations with him and it seems to be going well. The rest of the group, except for our thief were busy paying attention to the big party of bodyguards he walked in with that were scattered around the room.
Our thief however thought it would be funny to test out his skills and see if he could liberate some of the fancy jewelry and the large coin bag of the merchant. The negotiations went great and our leader managed to get us set up good for that job and for another guaranteed job later with the merchant guild in the area. We were totally pumped and the merchant got up to leave and there is where things went downhill extremely fast thanks to our thief. He failed his last roll while trying to get the coin bag and his blade slipped ... he slightly nicked a very tender and vital area on the merchant's anatomy. All hell broke loose and our party was wiped out by the group of bodyguards. The guy who played the thief did not live that down for quite awhile and we had many other times where he got us in trouble with other characters he played. He just played very reckless and he would either score big time or fail spectacularly. Well to get back to that fight in the tavern. Where it winds up being really funny was the fact that out of the group the thief was the only one who survived. The rest of us had to roll new characters much to our dismay and annoyance.
