Hi everyone! Looks like a promising year
Yes, I've decided to start painting(I've received a canvas as a new years present ) But I don't have any brushes or paints right now :
Can you share with me your experience in creating your masterpieces?
which brushes and paints is it better to start with?

oooh, have you decided what you're going to do with your canvas yet?  When will you get your brushes and paints?

I think my only 'masterpiece' has been this:

I used sharpies and it was on a flimsy box. Unfortunately, it also took me 4-6 hours. how embarrassing! LOL  I was actually quite proud of it though, since I can't draw worth squat.XD

I am one of the big artist on the site, in fact, I even have a DeviantART account. Although I haven't really drawn anything for the past month (not sure why though), but I will change that with some more in the future.

Here's some drawings I did that I posted on Vizzed

Yay! Another fellow artist (although I'm more of a cartoonist). I too have a painting canvas, but I'm not quiet sure on how to use it. The only brush I know that is painting related, would be Bristle Type. As well as the MultiBrush. I usually draw traditionally (pencil and paper) and digitally (Bamboo Capture: Pen & Touch), so I'm not sure if I could give you any advice there. The software I use is SmoothDraw, if you were wondering. The most recent drawing I did (that I consider a masterpiece) would be this digital drawing I gave to a friend of mine:

However, I messed up on a few of her character's features (Heheh, whoops).

I'm not a painter but I thought I'd jump in here and agree with Brigand saying " Use Acrylics ". I am a visual artist myself and by that I mean I have to have it in front of me ... I just can't draw it from memory or trying to visualize it. Not exactly sure if there is a term for it or anything. I am very good at drawing anything I have in front of me and it does not matter what the subject is. My favorite things to draw are old buildings and eye catching landscapes. Can't offer any advice to you as far as paints go tho because I use inks, colored pencils, etc..
BUT you are online so if you really need some help then surf the web and see what you come up with. Hopefully your painting goes good and we get to see the next Rembrandt or Vincent Van Gogh !! Good Luck. :O)

I am a terrible artist, however, when I am uber bored, I tend to draw scenery. It always ends up being a mountain side, though. Sometimes, I'll add a road and some buildings, but not as often as I did a few years ago.

Next time I draw something, I'll try to post it here, if I can remember.

If it's a hobby that you stick with, you'll see that large canvases and oil paints are pretty expensive.  So, I'd suggest starting out with small to mid sized canvases and acrylic paints.  The types of brushes really depend on what kind of a painter you are or what you're trying to do.  For backgrounds (which are typically done first) I like to use a large brush (almost house paint brush sized-it really depends on the size of the canvas) and other than that, I use brushes whose bristles form a point about the size of a Sharpie marker.

You'll probably find out that acrylics dry out while you're working with them if they're sitting out long enough.  So if you go this route, paint will be more affordable, but you have to know what color you're trying to mix and use it relatively quickly.  The upside is that your paintings will be ready to be handled overnight.

If you decide on oils, be ready for very easy mixing, blending and application with plenty of time to work.  These also work well if you're trying to create a two-color gradient.  Just dip half of the brush into one color and the other half in another, and when you apply it to the canvas you'll see the colors fade into each other-a pretty cool effect.  I believe that is used by Rob Ross a lot.  A couple drawbacks...first, if you're trying to cover something up if you made a mistake, the oils I've tried have not been nearly as opaque as acrylics, so it takes much more paint to cover something up.  Second, it takes sooooo looooong to dry.  Even with relatively thin layers of paint, I've waited 3 or 4 days to be able to safely handle the paintings.

Well anyway, my advice is to start out with acrylics and the size or type of brush is really just preference.  Hope this was helpful!

supercool22 :
Yeah, I'm also mainly interested in traditional drawing (as you can tell by looking through my profile) I really like drawing surreal, meaningful images, such as divine beings or other symbols

I am by no means good, but I would consider myself and artist. I can Draw Eyes, and I have been working on other features of the face.

I will try to upload some pictures of my art later. We'll see if I can get around to it.

I would consider myself and artist, but amateur.

I view myself as an artist, though I don't think I am as good as people say I am =3= I mainly draw anything that comes to mind (mainly anime people, but I do try to draw different things too), and recently, I have been coloring my drawings. I am also a traditional artist. I have painted and done digital art before in school, and honestly, thanks to me being very used to using pencils and crayons, I don't feel like getting into painting or digital drawing.

I uploaded most of my drawings on deviantArt, though I rarely show any here. Right now, though, I am using one of my drawings as my profile avatar for the fun of it Because I am really into tradition art, I really can't help give advice on painting

Hi there I don't really like to consider myself a good artist (but i mean come on, no artist has confidence in themselves these days ) But I do draw quite a bit both digitally and traditionally.
*cough*this layout*cough*

This is the piece of digital art that I'm most proud of, currently:

And this is a piece of traditional art:
http://i.imgur.com/KevKvFl.jpg

It's really your choice if you think I'm a good artist or not.
