On September 23, 2000 Hasbro Interactive released the sequel to Frogger known as Frogger 2: Swampy's Revenge. It was made for the PC, Playstation, Sega Dreamcast, and Game Boy Color. I grew up with the PC version that's why I'm reviewing it. Now that I've gotten all of that out of the way, I'm going to start this review.
Graphics: 8/10 The graphics for this game as expected look better than it's predecessor. The levels look wonderful especially the space levels. For it's time those space levels look marvelous. Also Frogger himself looks better than in the original. I do have one complaint though, Frogger's new friend Lillie looks ugly. She has these blue antenna looking things that I think are supposed to resemble ears. There's no reason she needed those things she would've been much better off without them. Overall though the graphics are great and for that reason I give the Graphics an 8.
Sound: 5/10 Like it's predecessor, Frogger 2's soundtrack isn't memorable at all. By no means is the soundtrack bad, it's just that I've heard far better video game soundtracks even on the PC. I'd say that Frogger 1 PC's soundtrack is slightly better than the Swampy's Revenge soundtrack. Since it's mediocre I have to give the sound a 5.
Addictiveness: 3/10 Frogger 2 has very little replay value. One big reason for this is because of how easy the game is. The only reason I'd think about playing this again is because it has good gameplay, but Frogger 1 PC has better gameplay to me plus it's much more difficult meaning you'll spend more time trying to complete it. For those reasons I give the addictiveness a 3.
Story: 6/10 Unlike it's predecessor, Frogger 2 has a storyline. Basically the main antagonist Swampy is angry because Frogger jumped on him and so to get his revenge he kidnaps the baby frogs. Frogger, along with his new friend Lillie must find and save the baby frogs from the evil Swampy. I understand that a Frogger game is not gonna have a great story but seriously? Swampy does this because Frogger jumped on his back??? Hasbro could've come up with something better than that. However since this is a Frogger game I'm gonna be lenient and give the Story a 6.
Depth: 2/10 Frogger 2: Swampy's revenge unfortunately only has 16 single player levels. In comparison Frogger 1 for the PC had 33 single player levels. I don't understand why a company would want a video game sequel to have less levels than it's predecessor it makes no sense. Another thing that upsets me is that Frogger 2 doesn't have any hidden gold frogs to find. The original Frogger had 9 gold frogs hidden in each world and it gave the game more depth. I was disappointed when I found out that the gold frogs don't exist in this game. For these reasons I give the depth a 2.
Difficulty: 1/10 The original Frogger for the PC was extremely difficult. Frogger 2 on the other hand is one of the easiest video games I've ever played. The enemies and obstacles are easy to avoid and 1ups are easy to find. The only thing that's hard about this game is getting a game over without purposely killing yourself. Knowing how hard it's predecessor was, I found it extremely disappointing to see how easy Frogger 2: Swampy's Revenge is. For these reasons I give the difficulty a 1.
Overall score: 6/10 Frogger 2: Swampy's Revenge took a step in the wrong direction. The game is way to easy, there are less levels than in the original, and the storyline isn't very good. Also the fact that there are no gold frogs gives this game less depth. This is by no means a bad game but it's not as good as it's predecessor. Frogger 2: Swampy's Revenge is a mediocre game at best and because of that I give it an overall score of 6.
