Hi. Well I use Linux as my main operating system and I was thinking it would be nice to have a Linux port of the rgr plug in. And I also have a question. Is the rgr plug in open source?

Hi ndjdjksisksk:

I'm not a big person on this site so I can't tell you about the exact license that the RGR Plugin uses. I don't think it is GPL, though. Some of the component plugins (1964, for example) are closed source. There are still ways of using it on Linux, though. For example, I wrote a tutorial on using the PlayOnLinux program to run a Windows version of FireFox with the RGR Plugin here. Be sure to check out some notes I have yet to add that are here as well (Links open in a new tab. Also, I have not updated the original post because I need to get a moderator to unlock it for editing.)

The note you are looking for is under the word "EDIT:"

There is also the Pipelight program that allows you to run Windows plugins in Linux native browsers, based around the idea that only the plugin has to be run in WINE. Pipelight has the RGR Plugin available as an experimental plugin. Funnily enough, I requested the addition of the plugin and then used the POL method instead.

From the sounds of it, there are no plans to have a Linux port of the plugin anytime soon. Some of the emulators used here are Windows only, and most if not all are in sore need of a version update inside the plugin itself. That is likely to be the main focus when the plugin gets updated. For now, you can use one of the two methods listed above (I recommend the first one, as that one is known to work better.

Although... with the IcedTea Java plugin you can always use the Java-based emulators in your native browser. And if you really wanted, you could always ask David for permission to try to make a linux version of the plugin. Don't expect an answer anytime soon though, as he is usually really busy and swarmed with other things to do. And he probably won't give the permission either, you I guess you never know. I've never interacted with him directly.

1. No the plugin is not available to Linux and the likelihood of it ever being developed for Linux is small. The user base of Linux isn't large enough and the development team for Vizzed is too small to warrant the development.

2. No the plugin is not open source.
