I guess I could have, or maybe I have, done a topic about these games before but I figured since we are all more or less adults. well, anywaýs. You remember these types of games? The classical Lucas arts ones from the late eighties/early nineties and the last good ones from around the turn of the millennium. Plus the retro-ones done to please old farts like us.

You did not spend your childhood playing just Pokémon, did you now?

Lets talk about it here.

Me, I love to play games like Syberia or Grim Fandango still. Especially if I have a friend to play them with since he or she will usually figure out what to do if I run out of ideas. Also please, if you know any good retro-ones like Richard and Alice or Tales of Bingwood, please tell us about them here.

I made a new post layout (this one) for Halloween that you didn't get to see. It has a point-and-click flash horror game built into it that I'm going to recommend here. The game is called DEEP SLEEP and it's actually only part one of 2 and a half. The last half is still in development apparently.

Other than that, I'm not really aware of any newer ones but I certainly played my fair share as a kid. I stuck to the mainstream Sierra On-Line offerings. A list of the ones that I played is

  • Gold Rush!
  • Leisure Suit Larry 1, 2, 3
  • Space Quest 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
  • King's Quest 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
  • Police Quest 1, 2, 3
  • Myst

There was one other that I distinctly remember playing but either Wikipedia doesn't list it under Sierra or it wasn't released by them. Unfortunately, I can't remember the name of it now. Out of all of the ones that I listed, my favorite is probably the Space Quest Series because I love the mix of sci-fi and humor.

I've never played any of the games you mentioned but now I'm intrigued. Syberia's graphics look really good. Grim Fandango just looks like a trip! The other two have a distinctly retro look for sure. Brigand, if you could only recommend one of the four, which would it be?

thephantombrain :

Though they are not exactly point and click, I would have to say Larry 3, Police Quest 2, Kings quest 4 and Space quest 3 (or 4).

I guess I'm not sure what the difference is between point-and-click and what I listed.

Actually, I was asking that if I was going to try one of the games you listed, which one should it be? Syberia, Grim Fandango, Richard and Alice or The Tales of Bingwood? I've sort of been looking for a new game to get caught up in...

Grim Fandago.  Said it.

I was never taken with Myst after I saw the visuals.  It was nice and atmospheric and had good visuals at the time but... meh.  It didn't capture my imagination the way other games did.

DeJaVu from NES was one that did.  That guy was awesome as you're a detective solving your own history.  And the alligator in the sewer, very nice touch.  It was all about holding on to money and making decisions and taking notes.

Crimson Room was another one that was web-based.  That game was fun because it made things simple while challenging the sleuthing spirit.

I think music, humor, fun, and goofiness are taken by Monkey Island.  Those games are the kings of point and click.

Maybe I was just stupid at the time (not that I've changed much), but how on earth were you able to complete Police Quest / Space Quest without a walkthrough?  I tried.  I really did, but I got stuck at almost every screen.  Games these days are too easy

Now you guys are talking my kind of old school games. Games like Shadowgate, Deja Vu, Kings Quest, Syberia, Gemini Rue, Blackwell series, Machinarium, The Curse of Monkey Island, Beneath a Steel Sky, Still Life, Blade Runner, The Book of Unwritten Tales, Broken Sword, Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Folklore, ICO, Fatal Frame, and many more that could be named. I couldn't narrow down which one would be my favorite but yeah I liked playing those games a lot. It's nice to see they are making a somewhat of a come back into the more modern graphic driven games of today.
@ thephantombrain : As for your question in your second post I would recommend one of these 3 for ya' : Syberia, Grim Fandango or King's Quest.
