Surprised their isn't a thread about this news.
So incase someone doesn't follow football or hasn't heard this news. Ray Rice, a RB who used to play for the Baltimore Ravens was accused of hitting his fiancé, who later became his wife. At first Rodger Goodell, with advice from the Raven's ownership suspended Rice for 2 games over the accused beating. Later, a TMZ source revealed the tape of what happened during the confrontation between Rice and his fiancé. As a result, Rodger Goodell suspended Rice for the whole season and Rice filed an appeal to be reinstated. Rice argued that he is being punished twice for the same crime (double jeopardy). The judge agreed and Rice has now been reinstated. Now the question is, will someone sign Rice to a deal? Here are some options... 1. Atlanta Falcons- Their run game isn't that good and Stephen Jackson has been disappointing to say the least. A Rice signing could be an upgrade and could improve Atlanta's offense that has been struggling a bit. Rice can catch the ball out of the backfield and could be decent in picking up the blitz, which will be helpful in protecting Matt Ryan. 2. Indianapolis Colts- They lost Bradshaw to an injury and Trent Richardson is clearly not performing well. A sign of Rice could 3. New York Jets- The Jets are in a rebuilding mode and Rex Ryan could be out a job. Chris Johnson hasn't performed the way the Jets thought he would and I believe is on a 1 year deal. Rice could be an improvement in both running the ball and catching the ball out of the backfield. The question would be does Ryan or the next head coach going to take the option. 4. Pittsburgh Steelers- Might sound weird given that Rice was a Raven, but this does have some sense. Steelers cut Blount over some antics, leaving Bell as their only good running back. Rice could provide some insurance incase Bell gets injured and give them a 3rd down option as Pittsburgh tries to separate from a crowded AFC North. So here are some questions... 1. Do you agree with Rice's reinstatement? 2. Do you believe that Goodell should have suspended Rice longer the 1st time and should Goodell be blamed for Rice's reinstatement if you disagree with Rice being reinstated? 3. Do you believe he will sign with a team this season and who will sign him? So incase someone doesn't follow football or hasn't heard this news. To answer your questions: 1. I think you can't go back and continue adding punishment to someone is a case that has been clearly defined and executed. As heinous as the crime was, at some point he has to be brought back in the league. Look at Mike Vick, for example, who was out for how long? And he didn't abuse a woman. Some people hate animal cruelty more than human cruelty but no one should be tagging on suspensions because they feel like it or they're pressured by the public. Goodell made the decision and I think the second penalty was just as bad as anything, since it is, as you point out, double jeopardy. Should Rice be reinstated? Yes. I don't like him but he has had his day in court and he's paid the price set to him by management. He's done. Grab the shoulder pads, Ray. 2. You have two questions in here. I think Goodell needs to know that video will never stay hidden. If he saw the video and decided to keep it under wraps, he should be fired/retire immediately. He chose to try to bury evidence to the public and that's not good business management. He should have suspended Rice longer or checked the rules and made sure they fully applied to the case. Goodell could have built credibility with his response had he made the right one and was completely clean with everything. If he hadn't seen the video, he made a good choice based on uncertainty. 3. Yes, Rice will play this season. He'll be buried in a crap team that needs help. The NY Jets are struggling with Ivory and Johnson and the Jacksonville Jaguars are getting way more out of Denard than I thought they would. Having a change of pace back with Rice and Robinson would make them much better and give Bortles a chance to win some games. Bortles is good and he needs the help. 1. My answers to your questions oldschool... 1. I do agree with Rice's reinstatement. Being a football fan and watching football since 2000, I have seen plenty of people get away with stuff ( for example, the Michael Vick dogfighting and Plaxico Burress situations ) and STILL get reinstated. Obviously, it seems the NFL has no problems giving people a second chance to prove themselves. So yes, Ray Rice does deserve a second chance, in my opinion. 2. I think his suspension for the season was a good call, even though now he's won his appeal to be reinstated. It was his first offense, he got suspended for the year, I think that is fair enough. 3. Now with what I said in answer #2, I do think a team MAY sign him. I'll give him a 65% chance of signing with someone before the season is over. As far as WHO he signs with, let me compare my answers to yours... - I can tell you right now the Atlanta Falcons will absolutely NOT sign him. Ray Rice won't even cross our minds. His behavior off the field will absolutely not fit in with this organiazation. You can forget about Rice ever becoming a Falcon. The Falcons will probably look at getting Todd Gurley in next year's draft. - I heard the Colts could be a potential target for Rice. Like you said, the Colts did lose Bradshaw and they're probably looking to - I also heard the Saints may sign him for the same reason as the Colts. They lost Khiry Robinson ( I believe for the rest of the year ) and also looking to regain some depth at the RB position. - And as far as the Jets and Steelers...he may go to the Jets. There is no telling what that organization is thinking with the year they're having. And again he may go to the Steelers since they got rid of Blount, to split carries with Le'Veon Bell. 1.
