I usually think I'm a furry, but looking at other furries I'm not sure. I'm not gay and I don't have any sexual attraction to animal-like people. I just think that animal-y people are friggen adorable. If I had no choice but to wear a costume at some convention I'd probably be a raposa or something, but only if it's necessary in the first place. So am I really a furry?

Here's the cool thing about the world.  You can define yourself anyway you want.  If you want to consider yourself a furry and you don't have any actual involvement with the program, whether it's latent homosexuality, attraction to animals or people dressed as animals, etc, you get to still call yourself a furry.

You define yourself.  You can be anything you want and no one can tell you you're not.  Unless you're telling people you're a professional athlete or in the armed services.  That's different.

Are you a furry?  Sure, why not?  You can be a low-level that doesn't take it as intensely as everyone else and that's fine.

You don't need to be LGBT or get turned on by erotic furry art to be classed as a furry silly. The fandom is, at it's core, art centric. As long as your a fan of anthopomorphism (did I spell that right?) you can call yourself furry, although most people think you need to be more involved in the fandom to a real furry (thats complete BS though). It's a label you give yourself, no one can force you to be a part of any internet fandom. If you feel your a furry, than your furry. If not, than your not. Simple.

Also, while their is a large percentage of gay/bi males in the fandom there is straight ones. And the... creepier side you seem to think you need to be into is actually an overexposed minority when compared to the fandom as a whole. At least from what I've been able to tell that is.

I would have to agree with the two posters above me. Being a furry is up to you so if this is what you want just say it. I have made a furry friend here and he is nice. I think the short form of that word mentioned above is anthro. I have seen some anthro stuff and it is kewl. I am getting to know the furry community and from what I can tell thus far is you are going to most likely meet a range of people who have their own seperate interests as well as similar ones. If you want to get a better feel for it..seek out other furries and discover. Mind you you need no ones approval to be what you want to be...in life or fandom so do as you will and at the very least...have fun with it. First of all, I would find out what the official definition of a furry is, if it does have some sort of official definition.

Remember that language is a changing thing, and if the furry fandom really is changing that way, then so will the definition of what it means to be a furry.

You can either

A. Accept the title and fight to keep it clean.

B. Negate the title because of how what the title means is changing.


If you're going to put up a fight to keep the title away from that stuff, and it really is true that furies get a bad rap because of a yelling minority, then you should have an easy time gathering some friends who are willing to put badges or whatever into their biography.

If you want to clarify just what you are, then do so. I would be identified as religious by the proper definition for example. I do not necessarily like it because of many people's preconceived ideas on what it means to be religious. But if this is the proper term, then it's the proper term. However, I fall into a certain kind of religion.

Rather than fearing the term I have to use for myself, I defend it and try to show others why I accept this term, or why I am religious. Believing in a deity who made life on Earth is something many people believe after all.

However, I also differentiate from the rest of the group that I would remain part of.

If you qualify as a furry, then you qualify as a furry. Just make sure you are able to explain how you are different, and that your actions match.

I'm not sure all the stuff that makes one a furry though, so, it may be a very loose term.

If you want to make your own clean animal liking fandom, then that's an idea too.
