Yunimori : In regard to .Hack//SIGN, I'm thinking that since it's an older anime, most people nowadays don't know what it is. What with the newer .Hack//G.U. stuff being super over the top action, that appeals to the more modern gamer/anime watcher. I love them both. I'm a huge .Hack// fan. Got a bunch of novels, mangas, games, wall scrolls, etc...

Anyways. I'll say hell yes to Kino's Journey and Hell yes to Twelve Kingdoms. Read the books too, they're SO good. It's pretty much, like, the only books that ever made me cry, and I read a lot of books.

For my suggestion, I'd say Soul Hunter. It's quite philosophical and it heavily based on Chinese mythology. There's action, comedy, philosophy, and just good times. Check it out!

Oh, and Gungrave, because that makes me cry... Which makes it good. (What?)

Not entirely sure if this is well-known or not but Samurai Champloo.  The fight scenes, characters, music, and shenanigans made it so great to watch.  Plus it's about over 20 episodes long so it shouldn't take you long to watch.

WATAMOTE ~No Matter How I Look at It, It’s You Guys Fault I’m Not Popular.

Thanks to
pacman1755's profile picture. I investigated what the anime was, and I liked it. I thought it was pretty humorous, but then again, it's pretty easy to humor me when it comes to certain things.

I will say Earth Girl Arjuna!  It's a great anime with action and romance.  The thing that puts people off is it's message and how it blends real life and animation at times.  Kinda gets freaky when it does that.  The music and characters really got me hooked.  I still rewatch it to this day!

Another is Slayers I'm so addicted to that anime.  I just can't believe it never got popular in the USA.  It is an action/comedy/fantasy anime that has about 5 main series, many many ova's, some video games (the rgr has an english version of the SNES game), and hundreds of manga.  I still collect what i can of this series even though I doubt it's updated anymore.  Last I saw was an update in the late 2000's.

Knights of Ramune and 40 Fire. (Or Knights of Lamune, if its the japanese one) It is essentialy a robot battling anime that consists of Lamunade (Son of the character of the first series, Lamune) who is constantly being called Lamuness (a hero from legend). He is sucked into another world through a game that two girls give him and he becomes a member of the Holy Knights fighting with his mecha Kaiser Fire against the Hell Knights. It is the sequel to Knight Ramune and 40 and has a sequel called Knights of Ramune. (Characters names are Ramunade, Ramuness, and Ramune in the Japanese version)

I tend to like things that no one else does. Things that most people would look at and go.... "That's not funny." things like Dry British Humor, low rated Video games. And other low rated Anime's. Here's a couple, be it hard to find, or generally OLD.

Blue Seed :: I own a view episodes of this and the movie. It's quite interesting to say the least. It's actually a LOT like Inuyasha... but the main thing is.... it came out a bit before inuyasha. Came out in 1992 in Japan by Yuzo Takada as a manga, and in 1994 was made into an anime. Its sci-fi. Well mostly fantasy adventure with a lot of different themes in it. The main thing is... Inuyasha might be better xD

The plot :: A teenage girl in high school girl with the special ability to stop these creatures known as the Aragami. These Aragami are kind of like plant creatures controlled by little blue seeds. These creatures are trying to kill her and they destroy things. Yadda ya. Her blood line connects her to a history of killing these things. While there is a man who is one of the Aragami who cant decide what side he is on. There's government involved... it's got a lot of old Japanese humor its artwork is stale but good for the time and it's really cheesy. Really short.

Ayakashi :: to be clear. This isn't on wiki as it's pretty Obscure... and has a good reason to be. DO NOTE when looking this up it is NOT Ayakashi: Samurai Horror tales... and honestly the only date I could find on the thing was 2005... not sure if that's the date it released or... well I loved this anime, but it's probably not your style if you don't like paying Close attention. It can get confusing, and rather disorienting if your not catching on. It was funny how I found this looking up neko anime. It's Fantasy Action horror sci-fi. The art and animation is real good. I especially like the character designs. Its super short as well.

The plot :: Its about a boy who was with his friends during summer and saw snow! But little did he know this was a virus that would change his future. Becoming this person to control a creature that consumed him in power to save his friends, and save the world little to know. A lot of people have a creature with them. A Virus of sorts, all different. He ends up meeting a strange girl who's familiar to an old friend that went missing. Trying to figure out this virus, and this girl, he gets into a lot of trouble. There are some serious consequences...

And those are the main three I remember. I do love anime's like Black Rock Shooter, and Final Fantasy: Unlimited and .Hack//SIGN I would recommend those as well, but I don't think there obscure or underrated, as much as they just weren't all well received or are past there time. I know there's tons more that I love that I'd recommend but....

Just find an anime site, and start watching anime. You'll find some really good anime that way and some bad, but if your like me and love anime then you'll have a great time.

The Tatami Galaxy.

This is one of my favorite anime, however it's really not very well known from what I've seen. It has an incredibly strange art style, incredibly fast dialogue (when I first watched it I thought it had been sped up), and the plot can generally just be confusing at times, which the fast dialogue doesn't help with, so it sort of makes sense why not many people have watched it. Still, I think it was amazing and definitely worth watching.

It's about a new college student looking to live a perfect life in college by making the most of his time participating in clubs, finding a perfect girlfriend, etc. However, he fails to succeed at his goals and meets another student who often ends up dragging him into trouble, who he comes to blame for all the failures in his life. At the end of the first, and every, episode (except the last two), time is reset to his first day of college (the start of the show), with him making different choices from the previous time, trying to find a way to have the perfect life he wishes for. This can get somewhat repetitive at times as some of the same scenes are repeated through multiple episodes, though for the most part it is new, but similar, stuff happening every time. The thing that really made the show for me was the final two episodes, which really tied all the others together nicely.

If you can deal with the abnormally fast dialogue, I'd certainly recommend watching it. The art style seems pretty strange at first which may make it hard for some people to watch, though over time you'll get used to it, and in the end it really adds to the anime.
It's pretty short, only being 11 episodes. However, if you're the kind of person who likes to watch short anime like this all at once, I wouldn't recommend doing that here. It makes it feel much more repetitive seeing all the episodes back to back, and personally I did this and all the talking gave me a headache.

some anime that people should watch that are not that well known might be:

1.) Kobato: About a girl (gasp) who must heal peoples broken hearts and takes the shards and put them in a bottle so that she can get her wish granted (there is no genes or open heart surgery's at all in the show, kind of a shame really.)

2.) Noucome: a show about a guy who has to make decisions on stuff that he does sound boring but can lead to some funny and awkward situations (sadly there isn't one that has potato chips as the main factor.)

3.) Kimi Ni Tadoke: Ya sure it may be a romance that doesn't really do anything new and the last few episodes of the first season may overstay its welcome but its still ok and has great openings which is always nice.

4.) AD police (is there files at the end of it i'm not sure): Its a simple 3 episode OVA that is based off of the Bubblegum Crisis anime (never watched it before) and as a stand alone OVA it makes me want to have a detective thriller anime based off of it.

5.) Un-Go: Speaking of detective animes that tingle my................ ears this one does as it follows a defeated detective who.......... solves cases and lives in a post war world which never gets explained and that's the biggest problem with the show (this isn't a full review so ill stop right there for now.)

6.) Karin: Also known as Chibli vampire of all things it follows a reverse vampire (aka someone who spews blood rather then drink it) named Karin who is on a search for love...................... ya..........................

7.) Kaze No Stigma: About people who have special powers and a guy who was originally a fire user who is now a wind user who comes back after years for some reason (cant remember haven't watched it in a while) its a interesting concept that's for sure.

8.) Trinity Blood: Not to be confused with Trinity souls which was a terrible anime squeal to the Persona 3 game, Trinity Souls is about vampires and there own little organization that does stuff for people but it suffers the 'read the manga' kind of ending but great opening though.

And that's just 8 of them i though up i'm sure there is a couple more that i have watched but just missed oh well i guess.

Great list! Kino's Journey was amazing. I loved trying to sit through the episodes and going, "WHAT just happened?" The more I thought about it, the more the random or completely out-there scene/interaction made sense. Great show.

I would add Fantastic Children as well. The name is a little... er... I blame localization for that. The show itself, however, is nothing like its title, in that it's complete awesome. The story follows three separate plot lines: a group of white-haired, blue-eyed, immortal children showing up across Europe for 500 years and calling themselves "Belfore's Children;" Thoma, son of an island's historical protector, who meets orphanage runaways Helga and Chitto and promises to help them find the place in Helga's drawings; and Detective Cooks and perky assistant Alice, investigating not only a runaway Flo (who may be one of Belfore's Children), but also the odd scientific experiments of a Dr. Gherta Hawksbee.

They sound completely separate from each other, but as the series continues, the link between them becomes more and more apparent.

It's quite masterful and tugs at the heartstrings beautifully. Don't let the title or the retro-looking anime fool you.

Might I also suggest Karneval? This amazingly colorful series follows poor Nai, who's searching for his lost family member Karoku. His only clue is Karoku's bracelet, which an early encounter reveals is a Circus I.D. After a run-in with a pickpocket named Gareki, Nai and his new friend become embroiled in the battle between Circus, an FBI-like agency that specializes in hunting down mutants (and... throwing circuses...), and Kafka, a secret organization that mass-produces said mutants. With Circus being Nai's only hope of finding Karoku, Nai and Gareki throw their lot in and let the fun begin.

While it's only 13 episodes, characterization is great, and the animation and art is remarkably pretty. Don't expect all your questions to be answered, however, as the manga is still ongoing and season 2 is *still* being considered. But I still think it's worth a watch.

A anime I recommend will be Akame Ga Kill. Not sure on when it came out but the anime is about a boy named Tatsumi who wants to make a name for himself. He encounters later in a string of events Akame and the group of assassins who are trying to bring down the corrupt king and bring order back to the land. The anime has action and does have plot development through the anime. Each character have their unique story and some of the villains have their own motives for their actions.
