I probably could've posted this in the gaming section of this site, but then 80% of the crowd would probably say Pokemonz.

I'm not into gaming that much anymore, but in my younger years I used to play a lot and almost every genre.  So what would you guys say, in your opinion, was the best game that was ever made and that you have of course played.  It can be on any platform.  This is more difficult to answer than it seems, since you can only choose one game and say why you chose the particular game.  For me especially, since I played so many, this was difficult to answer, but if I take into account how the game held my attention, in other words the story, the characters, the graphics (for it's time), how long it took to complete, the non-monotonous factor, the ability to replay the game (this is a big factor for me in games), the variety in the game, it would boil down to Baldur's Gate (PC).  This was such a huge game for it's time and it ushered in a whole new style of game play (although simplified versions of the same genre existed).  I'm totally not into D&D games anymore due to "personal" reasons, but purely looking at the game and how it was made, it was way ahead of its time and it just totally sucked me in and wasted away hours and hours of my day.  It was one of those games I just could not stop playing.  I probably played and completed it at least 5 times and every one of those times I discovered something new.  There was only one other game other than this one that drew me in and that was the more recent Fallout 3.  Thinking about it now, there are so many that I would like to list, but I think I'll stick with Baldur's Gate.

The best game I've ever played so far? Hmm, it's really hard to tell but I think it's Fatal Frame 3: The Tormented. I'm a fan of that series. The third episode is just absolutely amazing. The graphics compared to Fatal Frame 1 and 2 are much better. I keep lot of good memories when I played this game for the  first time ever, scary moments (the last fight was so oppressing, especially when you're running around in the pitch black darkness, trying to avoid your opponent who can instantly kill you) and funny moments. Also, I like the story based on that disease (that I don't remember the name) mixed with urban legends, Japanese folklore. It adds something else that the first two episodes didn't have. So yeah, I think it's the best game I've ever played. Although, I love the series itself.

SoL@R : Wow, this is an extremely tough question for me...after all, I have played quite a bit in my days. Metroid: Other M, Pac Man World 3, Namco Museum Megamix...the list could go on and on. I really want to say Metroid: Other M. I know a lot of people hate this game; but in all fairness, they took the exploratory, little story style of Metroid, and turned it into a creature kicking action game with an intense story. True, the story is different from what we know about metroid originally, but that does not mean it is bad. The graphics are great. For a modern game, the makers did a really good job combining old with the new in my opinion. On the surface, it may seem as though there really is not much to this game once you beat it...but if you manage to collect 100% of the items...you shall unlock hard mode. This is a terribly difficult  version of the game where you have only 99 units of energy and ten missiles throughout the game...and no charge accelerator item (it lets you charge beam faster) Battles like ridley can really be tough in this mode. By the way...I did manage to conquer hard mode. Overall, I think this is the best game ever for the way that it gives you a story with an air of mystery, heart pounding action, modern day graphics and the old-time enemies. It was a really good way to pull off action and crazy battles without killing everybody and tons of gore.

FaithFighter :  I tried playing the "older" versions (arcade) of Metroid.  Needless to say, I sucked.  It's ridiculous how difficult it is, or maybe it was because I tried playing it with a keyboard instead of a gamepad.

SoL@R : I think I attempted the first version of metroid once, but i could not stand the low graphics quality. However, I still managed to get the feel of the original story with Zero Mission. And yes, metroid is not a good keyboard game...even in the 2d sidescrolling style. However, even with a gamepad, the game can be frustrating. Be a largely exploratory series, you virtually have to discover your way through the entire game. This is one of the reasons I especially liked other m...because it broke away from that tradition.

endings : River City Ransom is easily a top 3 all time game for any and every system in the history of other.  The part where you get the smile for free made me laugh and growing up seeing Alex's butt in the sauna made me laugh harder.  I never officially beat that game until I was older because I never went back to Sherman Park to pick off that second boss.  The school doors always killed me being closed.

My game pick is Dragon Warrior III.  I loved the original and the third game, with night and day, with the combat system, really opened the door to RPGs in my world.  It was my first true experience keeping notes on where was what and this was all before the internet so I didn't have FAQs easily available and I had to do all the work myself with the manual and a sprial bound notebook.

Growing up, all I could ever do was talk about how much I loved Mario Kart 64. Then, when I get it again a few months ago, it's boring after a few hours.

So, I guess I would have to say Tetris Plus. My mom played that game so much that she got me and my sisters addicted to it. I loved playing the story with her. We would race to see who would kill the chibi professor the least ammount of times before you completed the first 30 puzzles on the first world or things like that. We would sit there and play it for hours.

SoL@R : I'm not sure that you will like this or not, but I have a little update. I just recently purchased Megaman the anniversary collection. It's perfect! This game (which is actually a combo of megaman games) exemplifies the way I feel games should be made. Good. Fun. Hard. Cool.

My best game ever would have to be one of the following:

Super Mario World
Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Phantasy Star 4

I've played each of those games so many times through and loved them every time. I could start up a game and play them again without being bored too.

Brigand :  These days Geezers aren't what it used to be :/

Respect the forum rules people.  In my book (on this particular forum) a "Geezer" should be 30+.  Oh and for the younger folk, a "Geezer" is not that thing that sits on / in your roof and makes the water hot or a Yellowstone park wonder of the world although I probably could be if I wanted to ;p.  I also probably should've been more specific regarding the type of games in my opening post...

SoL@R: I can't narrow it down to one so I have to agree that this is a real hard question to answer. So I guess I will answer by game type and try to keep the list small.
Fighting games : Killer Instinct, Super Street Fighter Turbo, Samurai Showdown.
Platform games : Super Metroid, Ninja Gaiden, Castlevania
Point and Click games : Broken Sword, Syberia, Kings Quest
Strategy games : Civilization, FF Tactics, Heroes of Might and Magic III: Armageddon's Blade
Rpg : Baldur's Gate, FF 3, Wizardry, and Suikoden
Misc. games : Blaster Master, Golden Axe, Mech Warrior.
Could list others but I wanted to keep the list small as possible and not be listing a ton of games. As for me, I personally could care less about graphics for most games I play. I just like them because either the story is good or something about the game just grabs my attention and holds it. All those games I named did that for me. Killed many hours ( and quarters ) playing them.

There are a lot of games that have stuck with me over the years, games that I come back to play time and time again, but if I had to choose just a single game it would have to be Fallout 2.  I think I've played that one more than any other game I've ever owned, and I find myself coming back to play it again about once a year, or whenever I get the urge to find some new way to approach the game.

So many great games that I've played over the years, . . . .

Honorable mentions (In no particular order):
-Castlevania: Symphony of the night
-Iron Tank
-Final Fantasy (Yes, the first one)
-Diablo 2
-The Legend of Zelda
-The Guardian Legend
-Dragon Warrior (Again, the first one)
-Shadowgate
-Command & Conquer 2: Red Alert
-Fallout 1
-Minecraft
-Fallout: New Vegas
-Arcanum
-Street Fighter 2
-Suikoden
-Zork

geeogree : Yay! Phantasy Star IV! I still can't get enough of that game. The colors, the music, the gameplay... I have produced three separate speedruns of the game already.

Otherwise, my favorite games are Final Fantasy VIII and X. Despite a poor storyline for the former, it still hosts the best soundtrack ever, and the latter also hosts good graphics and music, although the voice acting was a little annoying at times.

Like everybody in my generation, it is not, and I repeat ABSOLUTELY NOT Pokémon of any kind. I had to go there.
The first game I can really remember enjoying spending hours on end playing has to be Final Fantasy, and yes, the original. Maybe we should have favorite game of each genre, I still remember playing "The Oregon Trail" and "The Ancient Art of War at Sea", when I was like 8, both on an old Apple 2e that I, on several occasions, hooked up to our VCR which provided a whopping 8 colors, state-of-the-art back in the day..
As I got a little older and the graphics engines improved, Diablo came out, then FF VII followed by a major breakthrough in real-time 1st person shooters and I picked up Golden eye for the N64.
So in short, I haven't played that many games, Final fantasy has to be my most memorable game ever, not only because it's easily re-playable due to the different group combinations, but for simple franchise longevity, almost 30 years after the original release and they're still making new versions based on group fighting.
My favorite 1st-person shooter with story-line has to be Halo, much better graphics, maps and weapon choices than Golden eye.
As far as single-player RPG,  Vice City and San Andreas have their similarities with Minecraft as in you loose all your gear when you get wasted, with a slight advantage going to Minecraft in that you don't get busted. My choice would have to be Minecraft which seems to be taking up most of my time lately.
