My little sister just gave birth to the most beautiful little girl in September. Her name is Lillian Pearl and I fell in love when I first held her. However, now I'm freaking out. For now my little sister lives with me and my mom and I have no idea at all how to help raise a baby. I want to be a good uncle and male role model for my little lily pad but I have no idea what to do or how to start. So if someone could give me a bit of advice it would be extremely helpful.

lisalo : My sister is a bit overprotective still since Lily is still only two months old so the most I've been able to do is make bottles and feed her plus entertaining her while my sister sleeps. She won't let me help out with anything else yet but I'm a bit worried about when she will and if I'll mess up or not.

There's classes and books for that sort of thing, if you have the time, so it's not like it's that bad. Still, there are also other things you can do to help like helping in the cleaning of her room and so on.

geeogree : You're a dad; you got anything for him?

All I can really suggest is to be yourself, but to watch yourself carefully when you are around the kid. Try and interact with the kid.

I'm a dad and I work with little kids all the time at work.

It's not hard but you have to get the experience.  If your sister is overprotective, ask her to teach you how to do everything and learn.  And then get the reps in while she's watching.  Learn to do the scut work like diapers and soothing her and you get to have more fun when your sister trusts you.

Generally, your mission is to make sure she doesn't kill herself.  Talk to her, only use real words (don't baby talk), play with her and let her discover things around her.  Interact with her and that's about all she needs.  She's too young to really do anything but she'll love looking at faces when she's  2 months old.  She'll also like looking at the contrast between black and white because she can't fully recognize colors just yet.  Put a black piece of paper next to a white one and let her stare.  Let her stare at your face for ten minutes if she likes.  And hold her and talk to her.

That's all you have to do.  Show your sister you're learning and you're trying to help and she'll let you get in there.  Watch her do everything and ask if you can try.  Don't force it, she's the mom and her word goes.

Oh.  Read to her.  Read to your niece.  Read to her as much as possible.  Let her love books and experience them by eating them.  Teach her how magical they are.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the advice. It has really helped a lot even though my sis won't let me change Lily's diapers because I'm male.

warmaker : the black and white contrast and the faces are really fun for her and her smiles are adorable so thanks. She has tried to eat a book funnily enough and thanks for the advice on talking with real words instead of baby speak.

GlazedKitten : The baby center did have a lot of information so thanks for the tip. Also Ganon has no power here, I have the Master Sword!

thing1 : Interacting has helped and I do watch myself carefully and being myself around her is a bit hard since I'm a bit high strung and she's too young for me to be that active around her. But thanks for the advice.

lisalo : I don't actually have a way to get to the classes at the moment but thanks for the tip. Also Lily stays in her mothers room and she doesn't like me touching her stuff so I can't help there as much as I'd like to.

In my experience with children I would have to say one thing not to miss out on is plenty of love and affection for your new little friend and family member. If she is having an unhappy moment you may hold her and rock her and hum a tune. I would hold my younger cuz eli when he was young and hum him to sleep. Music is a wonderful thing to introduce children to. I recommend either Disney or classical played just enough so she can hear. Happy songs. Babies love to put stuff in their mouth! Watch out for this but, I do recommend special teething rings just so she can maybe get a feel for this. Lastly, get her a furry friend! (stuffed animal) something you believe she can hold with out trouble and is super fuzzy and cute. She will positively LOVE that! That's about all I can think of at this point. Oh, one last thing, don't forget to share smiles with her and plenty of laughing...LOL.
