Are layouts applied to posts retroactively?

If I start using a custom layout, will it be applied to all my previous posts as well, or just posts I make after that point?

The more complex reason behind this question is that I previously posted a translation guide which uses Japanese text. The Japanese text wasn't supported until David did some changes, so I'm concerned that changing my layout could change my font and break the translation guide again (not to mention squish the formatting) and I don't want to have to get David to fix it again.

It won't change all the previous ones unless somebody has auto updating on which then it only shows for them. Besides that you should be good when you start using one.
