I'm wondering if anyone else feels the way I do about speeding now that we're all older. Have your driving habits changed? Are you more patient on the road or do you still speed and drive aggressively?

I find that I'm almost never in a rush when I drive. I'm one of those drivers doing about 5-10 (kph) over the limit but no faster. I don't understand why people speed anymore. It rarely gets you where you want to go much faster and causes a lot of stress on you and your car .

Just wondering how other people feel now that you've been driving for about 10 years. I got my license at 16 so I've been driving for 15 years now.

Yeah, my driving habits have changed a bit since I got my license about 3 years ago. I tend to go about 5 or 6 mph over the limit if I am not in a city. Sometimes, I'll go 10 over if it's the interstate, and it's the country, where the cops are never there, and if they are, they don't care unless you are going 20 over or racing.

I also try not to parallel park if I can avoid it.

I have always been a pretty calm driver.  I will never understand people with road rage, riding with ragers used to scare me as a child and now it makes me laugh.  When it comes to speeding though I have noticed a difference since somewhere around turning 30ish.  I used to speed like crazy and weave through traffic for fun, not because I was late.  I haven't really done that in years.  BTW a Honda Civic 88' Hatchback will go 140mph givin enough time (I say 140 the odometer tops at 120 but it kept going faster).  One last thing is that when it snows the rally car driver in me comes out.  I love to use the e-brake and slide around, only wrecked one car that way.

I'm about the same. I find myself going a little faster on some roads, but generally don't go more than 5-10 over the speed limit, if at all. It's just too stressful to drive like the Little Old Lady from Pasadena.

edit: oops. I'm 22, just realized this was in Geezer Corner. *prepares for destruction* Sorry.

I'm also a pretty calm driver, especially now that I've got kids.  In fact I never used to drive aggressively or recklessly, well maybe once or twice when I still had hormones :p  The average speed limit on our national roads (outside city limits) are 75mph.  I hardly ever drive faster than that because 1.  See first sentence and 2. Our ridiculous fuel price.  There's a huge difference in fuel consumption once you go over 75.  It's unbelievable.

I've been driving 8 or 9 years, but I can't say my driving habits have changed.  I didn't REGULARLY speed, but I did get two speeding tickets when I wasn't paying attention to my speedometer.  That was enough to cause me to be extra cautious.  I never, ever go more than 4 miles above the speed limit because I heard somewhere that it's the "magic cushion" of not getting tickets.

I will say I'm more PATIENT with bad drivers just because there's no point in letting blood pressure rise over something you can't control.  Actually... I find it amusing to see all those people speed, and then to see them at the next light.  Why don't they ever realize that speeding or what I like to call 'speed weaving' next to NEVER gets them somewhere faster?  Are 30 seconds off your trip REALLY going to make a difference in your day?

I live a charmed life on the road. I will often speed, but always slow down at short intervals, and know the speedtrap sections. But I'll punch up to about 80-90, then go through a short period of 50. I am more patient in person than I am on the road. Sometimes a jerky-jerk on the road can get my competitive side out and i'll try to shut them out. I've had three really close calls with the police, but so far, that car angel on my shoulder is looking out for me.

I have never been a speed driver. I'm seen and heard of too many people getting in wrecks in getting killed because they were in a hurry

I have been driving about 14 years now as like you I got my license when I was 16. When I first started driving my average speed was 30 mph. Now since I'm older I top out about 40 mph. I'm a slow driver. The fastest I ever went was 55-60 mph. When there is a storm around I will drive a little bit faster but usually 10 under the speed limit

I've always been a little bit of an adrenaline junkie (No where near as bad as I once was.) so there are times that I look for excuses to pull some of the stunts I used to pull as a kid, but mostly I'm a more conservative driver now.

Hmm, I never has an issue with road rage or "aggressive" driving, but when I was younger I did drive very fast,
and was known to take very sharp turns, and drive around like I was on a track (only when the streets were empty, but still)
It was more joy riding than it was anything else though.
Now, I certainly do that far less, as I am more safety conscience.
Still though, I'll sometimes hit those long stretches of empty highway, pop in some White Zombie, crank the volume, and just go!

SoL@R : did you find having kids changed how you drive? I was always fairly slow as a driver once I hit my 20's but I found having kids made me even more aware of bad drivers and conscious of my own driving habits.

Singelli : yeah, that's generally what I do. I'm amazed that even when I do "speed" that there are people doing 15-20 over the limit almost no matter what the speed limit is or what the conditions are.

geeogree :  Very much.  I'm especially pedantic on wearing seat / safety belts.  My wife on the other hand is a little bit more never-minded when it comes to that.  I find that I'm super conscious of things around me when I drive.  I suppose it also has got to do with me being in an accident during my student years.  Fortunately I walked away unscathed, but it wakes you up.

I like to go fast. But I really don't do it as much, yes I still speed but that only because I don't pay attention to the speedometer. That is why I'm happy my truck kicks it self out of gear at 93mph. Now it doesn't bother me to get past where at one point I was the leader and noone past me.

Well that depends on a few things. First of all if I am on the highway, I do speed a tiny bit like 5 miles over the speed limit. Sometimes a little more. The primary reason is because I don't want to get run off the road. I have found as most have that people drive like maniacs and sometimes go up to 20 to 25 over the speed limit and I don't want them smashing into me.

As for city driving I really do try to drive the limit. I know I was accused of driving like an old lady by an old lady once. I was going to work a few years ago, but I really didn't want a speeding ticket going through a school zone. Oh by the way she got a speeding ticket by that school zone about a month after she said what she said so I guess I was right to drive like an old lady, lol!!!

As for aggressive driving you are never going to see me cut people off with minimal space and give the middle finger, etc. That's not in my nature. I also mentor some teens and young adults and do not want to set a horrible example for those young men. Even with them being in college and crazy as all get out I don't want them seeing me act crazy, lol!

I'd have to say that depends on if I have someone in the car besides just me. If it is my wife or some friends then yes I drive a bit faster than I would with kids in the car. I tend to drive much faster than I used to when I was younger. I went the exact opposite as some of you I see posting in here. My patience seems to have dried up some as I got older. I am one of those that suffers a bit of road rage off and on when I see people doing really dumb things or something that could get someone hurt or killed. I am an aggressive driver at times as well ( passing people going slower then the speed limit, weaving bad in the road, etc... ). Although I try my best not to cut people off or anything like that. Haven't done the middle finger to anyone since I was probably about 22 years old. I like to drive faster because I've always been a bit of a adrenaline junkie for speed. Even being older I still enjoy it and tend to do crazy stunts off and on when I am driving alone on side roads outside of town. I've surfed ditches, ran through fields full throttle, had races down abandon stretches of roads, and much more in my need to get that adrenaline rush from speed. At the same time tho I have to say I have gotten much safer about it because honestly the reactions ain't there like they used to be when I was 20 years younger. :O)

Red states tend to be more lenient towards speeds so I tend to go at most 5 miles per hour faster than the speed limit. Unless, of course, the speed is 80 as it is outside urban centers in Idaho and Utah. Then, I might ride a little slower because THAT is a high speed and reaction time is greatly decreased.

But back in Canada, I would at most to 5 km/h faster since the police is stricter. Plus, highways in Saskatchewan are as well-maintained as the interstates; plus farm equipment often uses the highway.

Unless, of course, the speed is 80 as it is outside urban centers in Idaho and Utah. Then, I might ride a little slower because THAT is a high speed and reaction time is greatly decreased.

My driving habits are pretty much the same. I will only ever speed 5 miles an hour above to follow the flow, and I always leave early enough that I'm not in a rush. When I was younger I was far too afraid to speed, which made me different from every single one of my family members, who treated speed limit signs as kind recommendations from small bugs. Flooring it can be entertaining out in the open, but going fast when there is anything I could run into makes me really nervous. I don't really drive aggressively because there are a lot of things that can go wrong speeding to get through lights or switching lanes with only a little space.

Hard to believe I got my license 20 years ago, never been a car wreck that was considered my fault, was hit by 1 car twice in 1 incident, and some fool drove out in front of me and stopped in my way for the other one, still drive about the same though, not more than 5 over in the city, usually about 10 over, or 70 on the interstates, but that's just keeping up with traffic around here. The only things I ever get raged about are those slow-poke drivers in the left lane doing 5-10 under, and those other idiots that can't seem to read simple things like "Lane Ends" that like to wait till the lane actually ends to cut people off.

I remember when I first got my license I drove like an idiot. I sped all the time anywhere. I've been in a few minor accidents and one major one in my life though and that seemed to mellow me a bit. Only one was my fault, but I still drive like a granny now. I assume everyone is trying to ram into me. It can be annoying if I'm a passenger because I feel compelled to warn the driver of any perceived danger I may think could befall the vehicle. Look out!
