So, my aunt just called me and alerted me to this story. 

Pretty much what is believed to have happened is that a missile shot down the aircraft carrying a total of 298 people, including the crew, however, the US is not sure who is at fault.

In my opinion, it is important that you say that it was a Malaysian plane. Your post makes it seem like Ukraine is the victim, when the target was actually the Malaysians.

Another Malaysian flight incident? Remind me not to fly on Malaysia Airlines, ever.

This was just coming in as breaking news on CNN, on the TV at a Subway sandwich shop I was visiting earlier.

But in all seriousness, from what I have read, and what evidence has been shown on television, I think it was the Ukraine rebels. They are having a revolution or something over there. As far as I can guess, this was probably just a test to see if there recently acquired missile system works.

Its not the first plane, the rebels have shot down a bunch of planes and helicopters, this is the first time it hasn't been Ukrainian or military though.
A Ukranian military jet was shot down close to the borer the other week. They dont know if it ws shot down from russia or Ukraine. The real question, is did Russia shoot it down, or did the rebels shoot it down with missiles gifted by Russia.
Its of course possible, that Ukraine shot it down (thats what Russia today is claiming) but unlikely for two reasons
1:As the legitimate government, Kiev would kknow of all civil flights through its terriotry, the rebels wouldnt. So the rebels quite possibly thought it was a Ukranina transport plane (which they have shot down before).
2:Russia today is claiming ukraine deployed anti aircraft missile to that area, but the question is why would they?The rebels have no planes. Why would they need AA guns/Missiles?

Thats is the list of the dead. Russia will find itself in a lot of hot water, because all those nations will blame them for the attack, even if it turns out the rebels did it (since its almost clear cut the Russians supply them).

That is wrong on many levels.
"Crimea who has never liked being part of Ukraine." Before Russia removed the tatars that lived there, Russians and Ukranians were a minority. Currently 40% are ethnic Russians, the rest being Ukranian and tatars. The tatars completely boycoted the vote (and were opposed to leaving Ukraine). Assuming that even half the Ukranians voted to become Russian, 92% is way too high. That vote was not recognised by any democratic state.
It is very similar to the anschluss. Hitler got his supporters to cause chaos (check), sent in his troops (russians this time) as peacekeeprs(check), then organised a vote, where a disproportionately high percentage voted to join the invading nation (check).
Thats how nazi germany got Austria, and its how Russia got Crimea. Sun rise Sun set.

The fighting isnt even in Crimea...

Ukraine ousted their old president in a popular uprising after he scrapped a deal with the european union. The new government said they would sign the deal.
Immediately, masked men with military equipment appeared in crimea, and seized the government buildings (including the Crimean parliament). As soon as this was done, the crimean parliament said it was voting on leaving Ukraine (coincidence that soldiers had just entered the parliament im sure).
The fact that Russia had a military base in crimea, and a landborder (the only one with crimea) leads most people to believe those well trained and armed soldiers were russians.
Immediately after this, armed mobs started beseiging Ukranian military bases (and infact, some Ukranian soldiers were killed).
The ukranian military has since pulled out of Crimea.
The pro russian rebels are in the east of Ukraine. They had demanded Ukraine become a federation (anopther coincidence, Russia had demanded that before the rebellion, weird).After refusing, they declared independence in another vote, again, not recognised by any democratic nation.
They then miraculously found tanks, anti aircraft guns, a military leader who had fought in every recent Russian war (but claims he isnt Russian) and guns.
As for attacks, thats probably true, but thats two sided, the rebels and russians are happily rounding up anyone that has an opinion that doesent suit their aims.


World war 3, no. Its unlikely that any nation other than Russia and Ukraine will take shots at each other. As for not supposed to be flying, that's debatable. Airlines choose the shortest, cheapest flight paths. They fly through a lot of less than safe nations. As of now, they wont be flying through EAST Ukraine though.
