Now, anyone who has heard of or played Metroid: Other M have heard of the hate (hate being and understatement) behind this game. People use the same old complaints, never back them up, and I needed to get this out there to prove them wrong.

One of the biggest complaints I see for this game is the fact that it's either sexist, or completely destroys Samus's character. Cool, you hate how they made Samus's character in Other M. Then realize this. There is nothing to compare it to. Samus has no character in any other game besides Fusion, but that uses the same monologues as Other M, but people leave Fusion alone. I actually like Samus being not the perfect butt kicking character, although I do admit Other M overdoes the change just a bit.

EDIT: Well, I do have to admit, Samus has shown character in the Prime series, specifically 2 and 3, but the only instance we have of Samus' character in the main series is through the previously mentioned Fusion monologues (as well as the only lines of diologue Samus has in that game) and some lines of text in Metroid Zero Mission.

Another thing people constantly point out is that Samus gets something akin to PTSD when she encounters Ridley. People complain, "Oh but she kills Ridley all the time..." or, "why doesn't she get scared any other game?" Here is a perfectly logical answer. This was the first game in the series to truly give Samus some character, as stated above. If Samus didn't have character in the earlier games, how could she show a reaction to fighting Ridley. Second of all, Ridley literally comes back from the dead as a clone. What people always skip over is that Ridley does not die until the third to last game in the series, Super Metroid. He doesn't die in Metroid, he doesnt Die in Prime, and he doesn't die in Prime 3. He dies in Super Metroid, and then comes back seemingly from the dead in Other M. To add to this, he is a clone without all the enhancements the original Ridley obtained, so he comes back in his original form, the one who killed Samus' parents (explaining the somewhat trippy portion of the cutscene). I would be freaking out too, wouldn't you be?

The thing that gets me the most is these are the only two complaints I ever hear from people, and I already proved both of these complaints to be moot. So, what now?

Well, Metroid Other M has an interesting story, with some pretty nice character development with Samus after Adam and everyone else end up dying (aside from Anthony). To add to this, it has awesome gameplay, which is smooth and works well, even if Search View is a little finnicky. So, there you have it, Metroid: Other M is not a bad game. I would say it is the weakest in the series, but that doesn't make it bad, and I think people should actually try to enjoy it instead of point out flaws.

This Samus in Metroid Other M is supposedly the Samus from the Manga who suffers from post traumatic stress disorder. I could be wrong here but I found out from a video from Gaijin Goomba who did a video on Zero Suit Samus's Design on Smash Bros and why it isn't a big deal. I don't see anything wrong with it but oh well.  I don't mind Other M that much. I enjoyed playing it for the most part.

Supermatt6534 :
I also agree that it is the weakest in the series. As for the story, again, I find it quite interesting, although it does drag the game down at some points. The cutscenes and the "suspense walk" do take away from the gameplay sometimes, and make the game move somewhat slower. Other than that, its probably the most well developed storyline in the series (aside from all the hidden story elements in Prime), which gives it some merit.

One more thing I like about this game, as Other M is actually Metroid 5, it uses one boss from each of the 2D games before it.
-Ridley from 1
-The Queen Metroid from 2
-Draygon from 3
-Nightmare from 4

About Samus' character, she does seem a bit star-trek, star wars prequely sometimes. Other times, she can show good concern for her allies or alien creatures. A complaint the noobs I hear say alot is that she won't shut up about the baby metroid. Well I counted, know how many times she mentions him??? 2. Just. 2... SHE PROBABLY MENTIONS IT MORE IN FUSION! And trust me, if she said her lines in fusion, I'm sure it would sound the same...

One big thing that bothers me about the hate on her referencing The Baby, is that people say: "Its stupid that she has some motherhood complex over a creature from a species that may or may not be able to feel emotion." The funny thing is, I have seen the same people think that the Baby's death in Super Metroid is one of the saddest moments in video game history, which leads me to my point. A lot of the people liked the Baby Metroid, and thought its death was meaningful, but because Other M sucks in everyone's eyes, Samus isn't allowed to.

Other M was my favorite game alongside Fusion. I didn't really realize it until now, but Other M and Fusion was where I realized that (although I still like these franchises) I am drifting away from Mario, Zelda, Kirby, and Sonic. I seem to be finding the Metroid franchise more and more fascinating the older I get (16 year old male, by the way).

I agree, this game was really great. Why people were hating on it so much was just a mystery from me. Glad you agree.

I can definitely say that the game is critically shattered by the story of it destroying Samus' character, but I don't really find it that distracting. I'm more of the gameplay guy myself. The game to me, isn't a bad game. It's a pretty good game.

pacman1755:
While I understand why people call it sexist and whatnot, I don't see Metroid: Other M as a destruction of Samus' character. Throughout most of the game, she seems just as physically and emotionally strong as people originally thought she was, and moments where she wasn't, like the Ridley battle and Adam's sacrifice, were only there to actually give her the character that she was lacking in the earlier games, of which I actually like to some extent. Now, I realize this is just a translation of the way she was in the Japanese version, where in Japanese culture, Samus' actions in some of the cutscenes are viewed as emotionally strong, I still find that the game came out somewhat well. Again, it is far from perfect, and even with the problems I don't have with the cutscenes or Samus' character, it still manages to disappoint me occasionally.

I agree with you, I actually really liked other m. It was a welcome departure from the series' norm. The story and characters were very interesting, it kind of felt like I was playing an MGS game in the Metroid universe with how many cut scenes there were. But that's not a bad thing. However, I would prefer the next game to go back to more standard metroid gameplay. Other M was cool as a one-off.

SMBLOZ123 : Got to tell you, I do not get the excessive complaints about this game...It's my favorite! A lot of people rave about the prime games. I will admit that Metroid prime is kind of cool in it's own way, but I can't really get into them now that I finished them...Metroid Other M---I'll probably play that one a lot! Why? The story is the best in its franchise, and Samus finally takes on a human character-the others make me wonder if samus is a robot like MB! I only wish that all the good guys did not die--besides anthony that is. I would have liked to have seen a reconciliation between Samus and Adam--instead of his death. I think the next game should show that he did not die after all! But, yeah, Other M is my favorite--especially hard mode!
