Personally, I fared pretty well with the Vulpix I eventually evolved up into a Ninetales once I got the chance. You can catch one on route 117 right before you go into the desert.

Word to the wise: You can only get one of each elemental stone throughout the game, so with the fire stone, you have to basically decide if you want the Ninetales or...

You evolve the egg up into Entei with the stone.
