Hey guys,

I'm trying to fight with Mednafen to work in full screen mode but my HDTV that I use as a monitor, a Vizio VX240M from 2009, it does not natively support resolutions below 1024x768.

Every once in a blue moon it will work in full screen on Mednafen, but the majority of results I get are a blue or pink line at the top of my screen, the rest of the screen being black. Or sometimes the screen will turn blue and display a message that reads "NOT SUPPORT!". Sometimes I get lucky and can run a game in full screen by smacking alt+enter 20 or 30 times and getting my TV to cooperate, but that's rare.

However, I never have this problem with Nestopia on my desktop. All of my NES roms run full screen without a problem. I think that's because Nestopia is capable of stretching the NES game's native resolution to whatever resolution I desire that my TV and graphics card can handle. Is there any way I can do that with Mednafen? Or is there some kind of graphics driver I can download for my TV so that it won't be so finicky with low resolutions?

***EDIT***
With some help from thephantombrain and from Google, I found the values in Mednafen's configuration file that control the resolution and X-axis/Y-axis scaling. I set the values to my screen's native resolution of 1920 width by 1080 height, just like I use for Nestopia. I changed the X/Y scaling values to 16:9. Yet, every time I load a game on Vizzed, it overwrites these values back to 640x480 and I keep having the same fullscreen struggles as before. I installed Mednafen on my local machine and ran a NES rom of Gauntlet II with these settings and did not have any problems.

My most recent attempt was to set the config file in my Vizzed data folder to "read-only" but that only causes the emulator to hang when running through Vizzed. So, my conclusion is that there is some code or script server-side that feels the need to change the resolution settings for NES games running through Mednafen. My question is: could there be ANY way to get around this???

Regarding your edit, the values can't be changed within the RGR Plugin's config file because that is loaded dynamically each time you play a game using the plugin.

I was thinking maybe changing your computer monitor's resolution to a higher or lower setting might work.

EDIT: There's also Panel Fit if you have that available.

tRIUNE : For a while I was changing it to the lowest resolution my monitor will support, to give some sort of a "faux-fullscreen" effect, but then every time I set it back to 1920x1080, I had to rearrange all the icons on my desktop, which is more of a hassle than playing NES games in a tiny window.

I don't think you can use Panel Fit in Windows 7. If you can, I'm not able to figure out how... (Google hasn't been helpful there)

Hmm, it's too bad that my idea didn't work but I had no way of knowing that it wouldn't until it was attempted. I was trying to think outside the box and help you to avoid that standard answer that I thought you were going to get - "you can't do that".

There still might be some other unknown way to achieve what you want but it's beyond me. Perhaps tRIUNE's solutions will prove more effective and be the best alternative. idk - good luck!

Okay, well I gather now you're using a monitor which isn't commonly supported. The way the RGR Plugin is setup is to preserve aspect ratio. Now, if you were to use the same Mednafen emulator, which the RGR Plugin is built on, on your local machine, you probably wouldn't encounter this problem.

Sorry I couldn't help. Hopefully someone else will have a solution.

Well, most people use widescreen monitors these days, and my TV does support 4:3 aspect ratios that older games use, just not in low resolutions.

I could run the games in 1024x768 or 1280x960... those are both 4:3 aspect ratios and my TV supports both of them.

Here is a download link of the Mednafen version which the RGR Plugin is built on:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/mednafen/files/Mednafen/0.9.26-WIP/mednafen-0.9.26-wip-win32.zip/download

I'd like to know if the wide-screen problem is with the RGR Plugin or with wide-screen monitors.

I don't think it's all widescreen monitors, and I have a little 19" Acer widescreen monitor that I know supports lower resolutions, the only problem is that it's "somewhere" in storage, haha. If I find it, I'll give the older version of Mednafen a try.

By the way, the version I have installed on my desktop is 0.9.33.3.
