Hello,
I was playing LoZ Ocarina of Time for N64 and I just lost a bunch of progress.  It was the third time it happened.  The first two times I only lost a little progress but I lost a lot this time.  I was so far in Ocarina of Time (past the Water Temple) and the pluggin shut down and when I restarted it, I was in the middle of the Forest Temple.  It was like a punch in the gut when I saw it.

Anyways, I read the thread about backing up a saved file (see the passage at the bottom) and I really want to save back up files every few hours.  But I have a few questions about the instructions.   I went to the Start Menu and then to the Vizzed Retro Game Room.  But I can't find the folder called "Open Plugin Data".  I searched the files in the VRGR folder and in the sub folders but I couldn't find it.  Could it be called something else or is there a way to search for that folder?

Then once I do find that folder, what is this part: "the .msi syncs your user information with the site's data"

I'm not a computer expert but I can usually figure stuff out with a little help.

Thanks again for the assistance with this!

This is the passage I found on the instructions:

"From your Start Menu, navigate to the folder titled 'Vizzed Retro Game Room'. Once you've found it, find a folder called 'Open Plugin Data Folder', and click on it. After the .msi syncs your user information with the site's data, a new window should pop up with a folder labeled 'User'. That user number helps the website to identify that specific pc, NOT the user themselves. In other words, if you have save files on a computer in your living-room, and decide to play on a computer in your bedroom, the folder will be specific to that pc only. Therefore, you will not be able to access your files from a computer wherein they were not originally created. HOWEVER, there is a solution to this problem! Within your pc's user folder, there are folders for each specific emulator, of which contain another folder marked 'saves'. Inside that folder will be a file with the game's title and the file-type .sav, or some variation of a save file-type. Sometimes there may be several save files for one save state, so just  to be safe, make copies of both. Place those copies somewhere else on your computer as to not confuse the emulator"

It looks like you found the link I posted for you!

Here is a screenshot of the Vizzed Retro Game Room in the Start menu after it has been clicked. You can see that there are 3 options under it. The first is "Open Plugin Data Folder".

"The .msi syncs your user information with the site's data" is basically the same concept as playing a game in the RGR. Whenever you click "play game" on a game page this website and the RGR Plugin use the files located in the "Plugin Data Folder" to store your saves, downloaded games, etc. When you play a game your computer and the website are sharing info about the game with each other. Those are the layman's terms in the best way I can describe them.

If you need any further help or answers to questions, feel free to summon me and ask. (some users don't know how to summon, in case you don't know - at the beginning of a new line just type my username with a : at the end)

Thanks, I did get that passage from your response. And I really appreciate your help with this. I was really bummed when I lost so much progress. I really want to finish that game but I am reluctant to even play anymore until I can get this backup thing saved.

Anyways, I am not getting that Open folder in my Vizzed folder.

See what I get:

Am I doing it wrong?

Thanks again,

-Jeremy

EDIT: Also, why does it add question marks at the end of every sentence when I edit a post?  How do I stop it from doing that?

Yeah, that is the incorrect directory for save files. The directory for the image you linked is the Program Files - which is just files which were installed when you installed the RGR Plugin, and not the actual plugin data.

For that go here (assuming you are you using vista or above):
C:ProgramDataVizzedVizzedRgrPlugin

Also, you might not of known this: you can use save states with Mupen64Plus, but not with 1964.

You actually don't have to navigate through needless folders....

Open a Windows Run box with the windows key ( ) + R key.

In that box copy and paste the file path and then tap the enter key:

Windows Vista, 7, 8:
C:ProgramDataVizzedVizzedRgrPlugin

Windows XP:
C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataVizzedVizzedRgrPlugin

(for XP, where it reads "ALL USERS," you might have to enter your computer login name if the plugin isn't installed for 'all users'.)

Thank you very much.  As you gathered, I am not a comp expert but I can figure this stuff out with a little help.

So I went to where you said and I found all my save folders for the games I've played.  I found the one in question (LoZOoT).

Now what do I do to copy that file?  Do I just Cut & Paste it and put it into a new folder and leave it there for safe-keeping?  Or is there more I have to do?

Then when I lose my save again, how do I reinsert the file I stored in the other folder for safe-keeping?

Thanks again for your help with this.  It sucks that I have to do the last four Temples over but at least I don't have to worry about losing my info (after the first two times it happened, I cringed every time I had to hit F4 to load).

No, don't cut & paste it... 'copy' it. And then yeah, where you copied it is where you'd place a back-up save file (providing that the name of that save file wasn't changed).

Lol, I meant to say Copy & Paste it in another folder.

So I copied it and put a back-up in another folder.  Now when I need my back-up, I just go to the Vizzed folder and find the game and open the file and delete what is in there.   Then I copy the back-up file and paste it in the Vizzed folder again.

Is that right?

So happy to see that tRIUNE helped you get it figured out. I know you were having some really frustrating losses. If this question has been all figured out, summon the "local mods" and let them know that they can close this thread. Happy gaming and happy Easter, jim!

I am still not doing this right.

I was going to the "Downloads" folder here:
http://i1266.photobucket.com/albums/jj526/JimBrown257/Zelda_zps2e300cf1.png

And then I went down to where it said Ocarina of Time and clicked on it and saved this:
http://i1266.photobucket.com/albums/jj526/JimBrown257/Zelda2_zpsb78895c5.png

But when I copy that file and save it in another file, then use it to replace the file in "Downloads" it doesn't take me to where my backup save should be. Basically, it isn't doing anything to change my saved game.

Am I copying the wrong file? I just noticed there is another Ocarina of Time in the Rom" folder. Is that the one I should be copying?  Or is another one?

Thanks again for all the help with this stuff.
